School Committee Honors Winthrop High School Seniors

The Winthrop School Committee met on Monday, May 9, where it celebrated its graduating seniors.

Celebrating Seniors

With the school year drawing to a close, the committee recognized the district’s graduating seniors, who will attend more than 150 colleges and universities, including Harvard.

Nine seniors received the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship: Analise Bruno, Aidan D’Entremont, Maggie Doig, Anwar Ettabia, William Gillis, Ari Hain, Ryan Kfoury, Ramzi Khelladi and William MacMullen. They posed for a photograph.

Seniors will be enjoying several events. An all-night celebration will happen in the WHS gym from 10 pm on May 27, until 5 am on May 28. The senior prom will be on May 31, from 6 pm to 11 pm at the Hyatt Regency Boston Harbor. It will follow a photo opportunity at WHS from 5 pm to 5:45 pm. There will be an awards ceremony at the WHS auditorium on June 1 at 5:30 pm. A mandatory graduation rehearsal is on June 2 at 9 am at Miller Field, and graduation will be on June 3 at 6 pm on Miller Field. Details for events are on the WHS website.

General Updates

Student Jacob Oliver was one of the winners of the MWRA poster contest. Honorable mentions went to Elliot Alberto, Carmen Bauer, Aniela Capasso, Roman Carson, Veronica Delorey, Scarlett Fuller, Brando Konchar, Elise Linehan, Sophia Pettee and Wynter Rose.

The Winthrop Elks Club recognized the following middle school students for March: Stephen Barron and Kelsey Tallent for Grade 6, Francesca Indrisano and Alex Ross for Grade 7, and Erik Briggs and Jordan Mercado for Grade 8.

Project 351 Ambassador Jillian Buonopane organized a Cradles to Crayons clothing drive, which collected 52 bags for the local nonprofit.

Supt. Lisa Howard applied for and received a communication board for the Fort Banks School playground through the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism. Communication boards provide pictures to allow those with limited speaking skills to express themselves.

WHS updated its course catalog. Students have chosen their courses for the coming school year, and schedules should be available by June.

The committee revised its Zoom meeting policy to include live public comments.

Upcoming Events

A fundraiser to benefit Andrea Salvaggio will take place on May 13, from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm at the Larsen Skating Rink. Tickets are $5 and include skates, pizza and raffles.

The WHS Drama Society will perform “Black Comedy” on May 13 and 14 at 7 pm.

WPS teachers, students and coaches will be recognized at the 30th Annual Winthrop Chamber & Community Awards on May 21 at the Cottage Park Yacht Club. Tickets are $35.
