Decades of Winthrop school history have been preserved and made available to the public through a project initiated by the Viking Pride Foundation in cooperation with Winthrop High School.
The project converted aging VHS tapes containing recordings of school and community events into digital formats, protecting footage that in many cases had been stored on deteriorating tapes for more than 30 years. Some of the oldest recordings originated on film reels dating back to the 1930s before later being transferred to VHS. More than 50 digitized videos are now available for the public to watch on the Viking Pride Foundation’s YouTube channel, giving students, families, alumni, and community members an opportunity to revisit moments from Winthrop’s past.
The collection includes school drama productions, athletic competitions, student activities, special events, and other memorable moments from Winthrop’s schools. Together, the recordings provide a unique look at generations of Winthrop students and the traditions and experiences that have helped shape the community.
“This project gave us an opportunity to save a part of Winthrop’s history that could very easily have been lost,” VPF Treasurer Vasili Mallios said. “These videos are more than recordings of individual events. They capture students, teachers, coaches, families, and traditions that many people in our community remember. We’re excited to make them available again and, most importantly, preserve them for future generations.”
The Viking Pride Foundation gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Winthrop Cultural Council and the Mass Cultural Council, whose support helped make this preservation project possible. Community members are encouraged to visit YouTube.com and search for the Viking Pride Foundation channel or visit our website at www.vikingpride.org to explore the collection of historic Winthrop school videos.
The completion of this initial project is only the beginning. The Viking Pride Foundation hopes to continue the preservation effort next year by digitizing and adding additional recordings to the online collection, further expanding the archive of Winthrop school history available to the community. The Foundation also hopes the collection will give former students and longtime residents an opportunity to rediscover familiar faces and memorable moments while ensuring an important piece of Winthrop’s educational and cultural heritage remains available for generations to come.
Founded in 2004 by Winthrop High School alumni and community members, the Viking Pride Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting co-curricular activities for students and their families in the Winthrop Public Schools. The Foundation believes that co-curricular activities are an integral part of a student’s overall education, providing opportunities to develop character, leadership, teamwork, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Through the generosity of alumni, families, businesses, and community members, Viking Pride works to ensure that Winthrop students have access to programs and opportunities that enrich their educational experience.
