Inaugural 5K Road Race to raise funds for military care packages

On the morning of July 9 at Winthrop High School, runners and walkers will take to the streets of Winthrop to help raise funds for Richard Honan’s annual Holiday initiative in sending hundreds of care packages all over the world to our service men and women.

The 5k run or walk is managed by High5EM, a management company headquartered in Danvers, MA, who host several of these types of athletic events all year long, throughout New England. This event in particular has a little more meaning to Ashley Steeves and Caren Napolitano, owners of the management company.

Ashley’s brother Michael Steeves, a sergeant in the United States Marine Core, whose family resides in Winthrop, has been a recipient of a few generous care packages sent from Honan over the years.

“Hosting this event is our way of giving back, and helping to make sure Honan can continue to greatly impact the lives of so many of our local service members, whether they are serving at home or overseas. It is important they know, we are always thinking of them, even if it is just a small care package full of toiletries, it makes the world of a difference, says Ashley.”

Sgt. Steeves and his family had breakfast with Honan over the Holiday season at the Center Café that has since become a sponsor of the event, which is where the idea came to life. The support from the Town of Winthrop, the Police Department and local businesses has been overwhelming.

“We have no idea, what to expect in terms of participation, but the response from the community and the interest thus far has been very promising.”- Ashley

There are several opportunities for local corporate and small businesses to become involved in the event, whether it be through a race sponsorship or actually putting together a team to participate in the run or walk. A special thank you to the following sponsors: Paul W. Marks Co., East Boston Savings Bank, La Siesta Restaurant, Twist & Shake, Highland Real Estate, Center Café, Swetts Liquors, Elliott Whittier Insurance, Harrington House Bed & Breakfast, Balloon City and the Winthrop Market Place.
