The Winthrop High boys tennis team claimed victories in both of its matches this past week to climb over the .500 mark with a 5-4 record.
Coach Barbara Hoffmann’s squad recorded a big 3-2 win over Saugus last week. Alex Hamilton, playing at first singles, won 7-6, 6-1 in which the first set went to a long tie break of 10-8.
Brendan FitzPatrick, playing at second singles, won 7-5, 6-2. Brendan was down 1-5 in the first set, but then really turned it around and won six games in a row to win that set and then the match.
Jake Rand at No. 3 singles also prevailed in a tough match that went the full three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
The Viking doubles teams dropped their matches. The first duo of Ryan McKinnon and Connor Brugman fell 6-4, 1-6, 3-6 and the second tandem of Patrick Brogan and Michael Reilly lost 1-6, 3-6, which marked the first varsity match for Reilly.
The Vikings had a bit of an easier time in a 4-1 win over Revere on Monday. Hamilton once again triumphed in straight sets after a tie break in the first set, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-2. FitzPatrick at No. 2 fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, in a hard fought encounter, but Rand at No. 3 swept to a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over his Revere counterpart.
Tyler Norris and Patrick Brogan, playing at first doubles, had no trouble dispatching of their Patriot foes, 6-1, 6-1, while McKinnon and Brugman also won handily, 6-0, 6-3.
The netmen have a busy week on tap. They were set to host Beverly yesterday (Wednesday), travel to Lynn Classical Friday and to Salem Monday and then return home against Lynn English next Wednesday.
