Fall sports swing into gear this week

The 2026 fall sports season swings into high gear this week for Winthrop High athletes.

The WHS golf team, which opened its season last Tuesday with a 178-138 victory over non-league opponent Northeast Regional, was scheduled to trek to Northeastern Conference (NEC) foe Beverly this past Tuesday. The Vikings will host NEC rival Sampscott at the Winthrop Golf Club today (Thursday). They will entertain non-league opponent Everett on Monday and NEC rival Danvers next Thursday.

The WHS volleyball team was slated to open its season this past Tuesday at NEC foe Saugus and will travel to non-league opponent Chelsea tomorrow (Friday). The Lady Vikings will make the long treks to NEC foes Gloucester on Monday and Peabody on Wednesday.

The WHS boys soccer team will entertain Gloucester this afternoon (Thursday) and will travel to non-league opponent Arlington Catholic tomorrow (Friday). They will host Danvers on Monday and trek to Salem next Wednesday.

The WHS girls soccer team, which turned in a strong performance in a 5-1 victory over Everett in a pre-season scrimmage last week, will open their 2026 campaign at Danvers next Monday. They will host Salem next Wednesday.

The WHS cross country teams were scheduled to host Masconomet yesterday (Wednesday) and will travel to Beverly next Wednesday.
