Domelowicz Named Hamilton Town Manager

Joseph Domelowicz Jr., who has served as grants administrator and assistant Winthrop town manager for the past six years, will be leaving his position to become the new Hamilton (Mass.) town manager.

Domelowicz, 50, was selected for the position by the Hamilton Board of Selectmen from a field of 40 candidates. He has signed a contract Monday night and will begin in his new position on Sept. 4. His last day at Winthrop Town Hall will be Aug. 31.

Prior to becoming a Winthrop town official, Domelowicz was a reporter for the Winthrop Sun Transcript covering town government and events.

Domelowicz, who holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Buffalo

and a master’s in Public Affairs from the McCormack Graduate School at UMass/Boston, said he has enjoyed his association with Winthrop as a journalist and especially as a town administrator.

“Winthrop’s a great town that has a lot to offer and a lot of potential to be even better than it is,” said Domelowicz. “There are a lot of good people working hard here to try and help the town move forward. We have really good, strong department heads and staffs that work hard and they’re conscientious about their work and try to do their best for Winthrop.”

Town officials, who worked with Domelowicz in town government, praised his knowledge and expertise in his position and his outstanding service to Winthrop.

“Joe was a great asset to me when I was in the town manager’s office,” said Police Chief Terence Delehanty, who was an interim town manager.  “He really had the pulse on the state agencies and how they operated and how to process the grants and the project applications. It took a great load off my plate to have Joseph working with me. I will always appreciate his assistance and I’m very happy to see Joe expand in to the next stage of his career. It’s well deserved and I think he’ll do a fine job in the town of Hamilton.”

Precinct 6 Councillor Linda Calla also spoke highly of his knowledge of town government and his dedication to Winthrop.

“Joe is a wonderful guy and very knowledgeable and truly cared about the Winthrop community,” said Calla. “He’s been a good friend to the Council and to the residents of the town of Winthrop. He worked very hard toward this leadership position in Hamilton and I wish him the best of luck. The town of Hamilton is lucky to have Joe as its town manager.”

Looking back on his tenure in Winthrop, Domelowicz said he was proud of his work on such projects as the Belle Isle Marsh Walk and Ecology Park whose ribbon cutting is scheduled for Aug. 27. He also helped advance the town ferry operations in Winthrop. “I think it’s very beneficial in the long run that we have an alternative form of transportation to get in to the city of Boston. I’m happy and proud to have been a part of both those projects as well as all the others.”

Domelowicz singled out Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo and State Sen. Joseph Boncore for their work  representing the town.

“I think Speaker DeLeo and Sen. Boncore are incredible advocates at the State House and they take an active interest in everything that the town is trying to do. They’ve been champions for the town anytime department heads or officials need something. They’ve been very helpful and it’s been great working with them.”

He also thanked Town Manager David Cressman, Community Development Project Manager Tanji J. Cifuni and Administrative Assistant Laurisa Wojcik. “They’re great people and very good at what they do. I’ve enjoyed working with them. But it’s not just the town manager’s office. It’s everyone at Town Hall and it’s been a good time.”

Fire Chief Paul Flanagan also drew special commendation from Domelowicz. “Chief Flanagan serves the town in so many ways, from being chief to being emergency assistance director to being on the MWRA Board of Directors. He’s always looking out for the town.”

Domelowicz said he leaves the town with fond memories.

“I’m going to miss the town – I’ve spent much of my adult working life here after I moved back to Boston,” said Domelowicz.

Domelowicz also said he appreciates the support and encouragement he has received from his wife, Kate, and their two children, J.J., 11, and Drew, 8.
