Winthrop’s Alexandria Fisher had two hits and two RBI to power St. Mary’s High School to an 8-5 victory over Amesbury in the Division 3 North sectional final Sunday at Martin Field in Lowell.
Fisher had the key hit in the Spartans’ seven-run surge in the second inning, driving home two runs with a single. She later added a single in the sixth inning.
St. Mary’s (17-7) led 7-0 after two innings before Amesbury mounted a comeback bid that was stopped by relief pitcher Mia Nowicki of Chelsea (7 strikeouts in three innings).
“It was a great team win,†said Fisher, a senior captain. “Even though they [Amesbury] started to come back, we played all the way through. It was good to get the runners on base so I could drive them in.â€
Fisher is enjoying an outstanding post-season for the No. 8 seeded Spartans , who defeated Boston Latin (7-0), Greater Lowell (10-0), and Whittier (6-2) to advance to the final.
First baseman Vanessa Van Buskirk of Winthrop reached base twice with a single and a walk and scored a run. Van Buskirk played a flawless defensive game at first base.
St. Mary’s was set to play Greater New Bedford in the state semifinal Wednesday night. Should St. Mary’s win, it would return to the state championship game for the second year in a row. The Spartans lost to Assabet Valley Regional, 5-2, in the state final last year.
