Arnold Edelstein

US Postal Service Clerk

Arnold Edelstein of Winthrop, formerly of Chelsea, died on May 4 at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 94 years old.

A resident of Winthrop for 57 years, he was born and raised in Chelsea, attended the Chelsea School System and was a Chelsea High School graduate, Class of 1934 and a graduate of Louisiana State University Class of 1941. He was a postal clerk at the South Postal Annex and a proud US Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Winthrop, a very avid fan of all Boston sports teams and an avid gardener and green thumb.

He was the beloved husband of the late Leatrice Edelstein; the devoted father of J. David Edelstein and his fiancé, Lynn Bruno, Stephen Edelstein and his partner, Joyce Atkinson, and Joel Edelstein and his wife, Lori Rosenberg; the dear brother of Selma Sherman, the late Irving (Memo) Edelstein and the late Charlotte Gantman. He was also the loving grandfather of AJ, James, Jaclyn, Sophie, Lucy and Tamerat George.

Christine Franzese

Attorney

Atty. Christine M. Franzese, a lifetime resident of Winthrop, died at the Marist Hill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Waltham on Sunday, May 8, after a long illness. She was 54 years old.

Born in Boston, the beloved daughter of  Rita (Langone) and the late William P. Franzese, she was a 1974 graduate of Winthrop High School, a 1986 graduate of Emerson College, and a 1999 graduate of the New England School of Law. She was a partner in the Law Firm of Franzese & Franzese. She worked as the personnel director at Emerson College, taught at the New England School of Law and was a political operative for the Clinton campaign in 1992.

She was the dear sister of Janice S. and Leo Cushing of Lexington, Joseph P. and Lisa Franzese of Winthrop, William P. Jr. and Tia Franzese of Marblehead and Paula E. and Marc Rie of Melrose, and loving aunt of William Cushing, Ashlee C. Cushing, Kirby M. Franzese, William P. Franzese III and Annabelle E. Rie.

Her Funeral will be held from the Ernest P. Caggiano & Son – O’Maley Funeral Home, 147 Winthrop St., Winthrop, Saturday at 8 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church. Rosemarie Massa

Rosemarie A. (Lanzi) Massa of Winthrop, formerly of Boston, died at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital on May 8 after a long illness. She was 68 years old.

Born in Boston, the daughter of the late Alessandrina (Cataldo) and Louis Lanzi, she lived in the North End of Boston prior to moving to Winthrop 46 years ago. She was a longtime employee of New England Telephone, a member of the Telephone Pioneers and a member of the Point Shirley Associates.

She was the beloved wife of Robert L. Massa, loving mother of Michelle McCarthy and her husband, Sean Brown, Anthony and his wife, Gina Massa, Sandra and her husband, Timmy Alibozek, and Robert Jr. and his wife, Christina Massa, all of Winthrop; devoted grandmother of Patrick, Nick, Taylor, Devin, Gabriella, AJ, Amelia and Bobby; dear sister of the late Paul Lanzi and  his wife, Cathalina, Joan Griffin, Lauretta Noe and her husband, Santo, Louis Lanzi and his wife, Barbara, and the late Joseh Lanzi. She is also survived by many, many nieces and nephews.

Frances ‘Frannie’ LaFratta

Of Winthrop, formerly of Everett

Frances D. “Frannie” (Rotondo) LaFratta of Winthrop, formerly of Everett, died on May 4.

She was the beloved wife of the late

Juliano; mother of Cynthia Palazzolo of Winthrop and the sister of two late brothers. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral arrangements were by the Salvatore, Rocco & Sons Funeral Home, Everett. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.

 

Robert DiGangi

Member of Winthrop Elks and NRA

Robert D. DiGangi died at his Londonderry, NH hom  on May 7. He was 57 years old.

He was born in Boston on April 14, 1955, a son of the late Alfonso and Gloria (Guido) DiGangi. A resident of Londonderry for the past 12 years, he formerly lived in Medford, Somerville and Winthrop. He had been employed as a professional ramp transport driver for Federal Express for 28 years, retiring in November of 2010. He was a member of the Winthrop Elks Lodge, the National Rifle Association, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his Harley and going on vacation. He was a friend to many, and when you met him, you became a lifelong friend.

He is survived by his wife, Jennie (Valliant) DiGangi of Londonderry; one son, Robert J. DiGangi of Londonderry; his mother in law; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral arrangements are by the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 290 Mammoth Rd., Londonderry, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today, Thursday, at 10 a.m. in St. Jude Parish, 435 Mammoth Rd., Londonderry. Following cremation, burial will take place at a later date. Sean M. Hickey of Melrose died suddenly on May 5. He was 41 years old.

He was the devoted husband of Deana A. (Rosati) Hickey of Melrose, loving father of Cameron R., Regan C. and Coryn D. Hickey; cherished and loving son of Albert C. and Janice M. (Parella) Hickey, also of Melrose; caring brother of Alyssa C. Pesce and her husband, William, of Melrose; son-in-law of Anna Rosati, brother-in-law of Anthony Rosati and his wife, Tanya, of Winthrop, David Rosati and his wife, Melissa of N. Reading, Donna Matarazzo and her husband, Matthew, of Revere and Dean Rosati of Boston. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and many, many close friends.

Richard Francis Hagan of Epping, NH, formerly of Millis, died on May 4. He was 76 years old.

Andrea Caporrimo of East Boston died on May 7.

He was the loving brother of Angela Amorella, Enza and Rosalia Caporrimo, all of Italy; dear friend of Sebastian Martelli and family and Francesco Balistreri.

Jane McSorley

Retired Secretary

Jane I. McSorley of Winthrop, formerly of Watertown, died on May 3.

A retired secretary at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing, she was the beloved daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Bolton) McSorley; the devoted sister of John McSorley of Winthrop and the late Helen Slye, Sarah O’Brien, Mary Cloutier, William and Edward McSorley and is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Rae (Nappan) Barishman of Sun City West, AZ, formerly of Winthrop, died on May 3.

A retired long time nurse for Winthrop Public Schools, she was the beloved wife of Harold Barishman; loving mother of Michael and his wife, Heidi Barishman, and Bruce Barishman and his husband, Ted Kazich; cherished grandmother of Benjamin and Emma; dear sister of Edith Fritz.
