DPW Appreciation – Open House was an eye opener for many

Department of Public Works Director David Hickey rolled out the red carpet for Winthrop’s elementary and kindergarten students this week for an Open House as part of the national celebration of Public Works Week.

The students received a grand tour of the DPW headquarters on Kennedy Drive, where they learned about the environment and recycling, and saw how the DPW works to make Winthrop a better place for all the residents.

The staff at the DPW couldn’t have been more cordial as they welcomed the young students and the teachers at the Fort Banks Gorman School for a day of knowledge and fun. And what a nice touch by Hickey and staff by including an appearance by Spider Man and a presentation by Curby the Robot, something the children will remember for a long time.

We remember our field trips as elementary school students and we don’t believe we were ever invited to tour the DPW, so Winthrop kids had a real treat and we thank Mr. Hickey and his staff for their hospitality and creativity.
