Staff Report
Plans are coming into shape for Winthrop’s celebration of 250 years of America on July 3.
“We met again with representatives from three local Yacht Clubs last week and have set July 3 for the boat parade and other planned events,” stated Town Manager Tony Marino in this week’s report to the town council. “The event will begin at noon at the Town Landing (at 707 Shirley St.), with activities and speakers, and will conclude with the boat parade at approximately 3 p.m. The 250th Celebration will continue with other events held around town, but these plans are still being finalized.
More to follow, but we are excited to add this event to Winthrop’s 4th of July weekend festivities.”
The Tall Ships will be returning to Boston Harbor from July 11-16, with dozens of tall ships from more than 25 countries as part of Sail250, the official tall ship tour commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
In other updates in his report, Marino provided an update on questions about new bus shelters in town.
“We are on the list for the MBTA to install two bus shelters,” Marino said. “The MBTA plans to install half of its list before the end of 2026, with the remainder installed in calendar year 2027. We are reaching out to the MBTA to ensure we are in the first group scheduled for installation in 2026.”
Marino said the design work for the new fire station is wrapping up as the town works toward generating bid documents to go out in late June.
“We are finalizing the design and getting a price for the new stormwater pipe and retaining wall required along the new exterior wall of the existing gymnasium building,” Marino stated. “The backfilling work will begin after Memorial Day.”
In other infrastructure project updates, Marino said town attorney James Attorney Cipoletta is reviewing the easement paperwork for the stormwater work the town has been designing for the Tileston and Girdlestone neighborhoods.
“We are trying to plan a presentation to the Town Council by Woodard & Curran, the project’s engineers,” Marino stated. “After Woodard & Curran review the project with the Town Council, we will present the easement documentation for the Town Council to consider at an upcoming meeting.”
