Lt. Mary Crisafi Retires from Police Force after 29 Years

The Winthrop Police Department is noting the retirement of Lieutenant Mary Crisafi from the department after an impressive 29 years of dedicated service. Lt. Crisafi joined the department in 1996 as a patrol officer, and her unwavering commitment to the community has made a significant impact.

Throughout her career, she has served in various roles, including as a School Resource Officer, before steadily rising through the ranks. Notably, on September 20, 2012, she made history by becoming the first female Sergeant of the Winthrop Police Department. Her promotion to Lieutenant on February 14, 2021, marked yet another pivotal milestone in her distinguished career.

In her recent position within the Community Police Division, Lieutenant Crisafi has engaged deeply with the citizens of Winthrop, leaving a lasting legacy. Whether during Friday night open recreation, the youth summer camp, the Civilians Police Academy, “Coffee with a Cop,” or the Senior Partnership program, her dedication to fostering positive relationships within the community has been evident. Throughout her 29 years, her mission has always centered on helping those in need—whether supporting survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence or guiding the youth—her compassion and big heart have shone through in every aspect of her work.

Lt. Crisafi’s contributions have not only enhanced public safety but have also paved the way for future generations, particularly young women aspiring to follow in her footsteps. Her legacy is one of positivity, leadership, and unwavering dedication to the town of Winthrop.

“I have had the extraordinary privilege and honor of working alongside Lieutenant Mary Crisafi for nearly a decade, and I can wholeheartedly say that I would not be the Sergeant, mother, or person I am today without her guidance, knowledge, and support,” said Winthrop Police Sgt. Samantha Ferrino. “Mary has gifted me with crucial life lessons, passionately teaching me the importance of treating every individual with respect and dignity. Her poignant reminder that everybody is somebody’s somebody resonates deeply within me, reshaping my perspective on both my personal life and my commitment to public service.

“Mary is the embodiment of humility and faith, qualities that inspire me daily,” Ferrino continued. “Her heartfelt commitment to uplifting others and leading with compassion has left an indelible mark on my heart and soul. I admire her more than words can express, and I am eternally grateful for the profound influence she has had on my journey through life. It is rare to encounter someone so dedicated to the betterment of others, and I am truly blessed to have her as a mentor and friend.”

Winthrop Police Chief John Goodwin praised Crisafi’s decades of service to the department and the town.

“She had a heart of gold, she treated everybody right,” said Goodwin. “We will definitely miss her, and the people in this town love her, it’s just unbelievable when she is out there on the street. She’s always been an advocate for women in the position, women on the job.”

When it came to community policing, Goodwin said you could not have found a better person for the position than Crisafi. He also praised her dedication to addressing domestic violence issues during her time in the department.

“I have known Lt. Crisafi for over 50 years, and I can’t be more proud of anyone,” said Town Council President Jim Letterie. “Mary devoted her career to protect the town she loves with all her heart. She made Winthrop a safer, and more inviting community for us to enjoy. 

“I thank her on behalf of the town from the bottom of my heart, and wish her nothing but happiness in her retirement.”

Throughout her remarkable career, Letterie said Crisafi dedicated herself to protecting and serving the community she loves with her whole heart.

“Her leadership, commitment, and compassion helped make Winthrop not only a safer place, but also a more welcoming and vibrant community for all of us to enjoy,” Letterie said. “On behalf of the entire town, I extend my deepest gratitude for her decades of service and unwavering devotion. We thank her sincerely for all she has given, and I wish her nothing but joy, health, and fulfillment as she begins this well-deserved retirement.”

Council Vice President Hannah Belcher also praised Crisafi for her years of dedication to Winthrop.

“Lt. Crisafi is a staple in our community, proving herself to be a role model not only for other officers – especially younger female officers – but also as a community member,” said Belcher. “She gives of her time to Open Rec with the kids, and events all over town whether she is on or off the clock, and is always ready to do her job in whatever way is needed. I’m  wishing her all the best and hoping she’ll get some very well deserved rest and relaxation in her retirement.”
