Key stretch for 7-0 boys lax team
The undefeated Winthrop High boys lacrosse team will be put to the test in the coming two weeks when the Vikings will take on their stiffest competition of the season.
“It was good to have some of our players rest up to take on the second half of the season,” said WHS head coach Brian Donnelly, whose squad did not play during the vacation week. “We are 7-0 going into our hardest two-week stretch of the season. We are looking to continue to improve our fundamentals and get back to basics. Hopefully our team can step it up as we take on a couple of NEC games against Peabody and a big one against Swampscott before finishing the week with a very talented Shawsheen Tech.”
The Vikings were scheduled to travel to NEC North rival Peabody this past Tuesday and will make the short trek up the coast to Swampscott today (Thursday) in a battle for supremacy in the NEC South. The Vikings defeated the Big Blue 9-5 in their first meeting at Miller Field in early April.
They will return home to host non-league foe Shawsheen Tech tomorrow (Friday) at Miller Field for a 4:30 face-off. They will hit the road on Monday for another non-league matchup with Stoneham before returning home to face NEC North power Masconomet (which is in first place in the NEC North with a 6-0 record) next Thursday.
WHS flag football team splits openers
The Winthrop High flag football team split its opening contests this past week.
Coach John Cross and his crew defeated Somerville, 28-0, but came up short in a 12-0 decision to Bishop Fenwick last Thursday at Chelsea Stadium.
“We had some low numbers due to vacation week and injuries,” noted Cross. “We’ll be looking to bounce back this week vs. Peabody and Essex Tech.”
Cross and his crew will travel to Essex Tech for those two contests today (Thursday) and will return to Essex Tech next Thursday for matches with St. Mary’s of Lynn and Peabody.
WHS softball hosts Saugus tomorrow
The Winthrop High softball team will host NEC South rival Saugus tomorrow (Friday) at Cellucci Field. The opening pitch is set for 4:30.
Coach Erin Vercruysse and her crew came up short in their contest last week with Danvers, 16-0.
“We were missing three starters, but our girls showed up and tried their best. Danvers is a very good team, solid in hitting and fielding. “
Lady Viking pitcher Lucy Boncore struck out five Lady Falcons. Brianna Rizzotto and Kylie McFarland each had a hit for Winthrop.
The Lady Vikings will travel to Northeast Regional on Monday and will return home to entertain Swampscott next Wednesday at 4:30 at Cellucci.
