National Grid to Sponsor Movie Night

Special to the Transcript

Local organizers of Movie Night met with National Grid on April 3 for the presentation of a donation for Movie Night, one of the highlights of the summer in Winthrop. The Friends of Winthrop Beach sponsors free, public events on our town’s beaches and parks and supports educational and recreational activities throughout the year.  Last year’s events included the Disney animated film “Luca,” co-sponsored by the Winthrop Public Library and Parks and Rec. Watch for date and location in the Transcript, WCAT and social media.

The annual “Sunday Morning Yoga on the Beach with Peter Sacco” will continue all summer beginning at 9 AM on June 15th at the Cutler Street entrance to DCR Winthrop Beach, thanks to a grant from Save the Harbor. Registration is not required.  This weekly event is free and everyone is welcome.

Last year the Friends sponsored an excellent “Shark Talk” with Dr. Greg Skomal, internationally acclaimed shark expert, at Winthrop High School’s Shapiro Center for the Performing Arts. Last August the Friends was proud to support “Accessible Adventures” sponsored by the Winthrop Commission on Disabilities.

This year’s “See the Seals” programs on Short Beach with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will continue as long as the seals stay in our waters, and summer programs will include Tide Pool Exploration at Winthrop Beach for children and adults. These activities and events are made possible with donations from individuals and our local business community.

The Friends of Winthrop Beach, the Library and Parks and Rec are grateful to National Grid for their generous contribution to Movie Night this summer.
