WHS Girls Soccer Celebrates Senior Night With 1–0 Win

The Winthrop High girls soccer team celebrated Senior Night in the best possible fashion with a 1-0 victory over Northeastern Conference rival Salem under the lights at Miller Field this past Tuesday evening.

Prior to the contest, the 12 members of the Class of 2023, captain Maddie Stiglets, capt. Lily Tallent, capt. Mia Norris, capt. Abby Holmes, Julia Holmes, Emma Holmes, Elizabeth Quinn, Kira Diaz, Cori Powell, Paola Ivanova, Malin Flatner, and Olivia Skomro, were honored for their contributions to the Lady Viking soccer program.

Winthrop notched the winning goal when Kaylee Farrell made a nice run to the Salem goal to deliver a header into the back of the net off a pass from Hannah Parker. Kaylee headed the ball high into the Salem goal over the outstretched arms of the Salem keeper.

Last Friday, the Lady Vikings edged non-league opponent Boston Latin Academy, 1-0. Sophomore Taia Martucci, assisted by Hannah Parker, netted the game-winner late in the match.

“It was a struggle for us to find the back of the net the whole game, even though we dominated play,” said WHS head coach Tracey Martucci.

In between those contests, the Lady Vikings took on an undefeated (15-0-1) Masconomet squad that is the second-ranked team in the state in Division 2.

Although Winthrop came out on the short end of a 6-0 decision, Martucci was pleased with her team’s effort.

“They are a very talented team and we knew it was going to be a tough game,” said Martucci. “But they never quit and worked their hardest.”

The Lady Vikings presently stand at 6-9-1 on the season and were set to wrap up their 2022 campaign with two home matches against Marblehead yesterday (Wednesday) and Peabody tomorrow (Friday).

WHS Boys Soccer Team Plays Well on Senior Night

The Winthrop High boys soccer team played its best game of year on Senior Night last Thursday evening against Gloucester under the lights at Miller Field.

The Vikings had dropped the first meeting between the teams earlier in the season by a wide 7-0 margin, but the Vikings parlayed the spectacular goalkeeping of Mateo Martinez, some excellent play by Loert Mana up top, and their second goal of the year by Eron Muja to take a 1-0 lead at the intermission.

The Vikings maintained their slim lead through most of the second half, but with about 10 minutes to play, the refs awarded the Fishermen a penalty kick. Gloucester converted the PK to bring the game back to level and took advantage of a couple of bad breaks for the Vikings late in the game to claim a 3-1 victory.

“I was extremely proud of the boys, who had nothing to play for but pride at 0-15,” said WHS head coach Phil Ronan. “They played their hearts out.”

Ronan and his crew will conclude their 2022  season when they travel to Salem today (Thursday) and to Northeast Regional tomorrow (Friday).

WHS Volleyball Team Defeats Saugus, 3-1

The Winthrop High volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over Saugus last Wednesday by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, and 25-20.

Among the highlights of the match for the Lady Vikings were the play of Bridget Hickey, who delivered the first points of the first and third sets through kills and who also had a serving streak of three points in the fourth set; Lara Ferrari, who had a serving streak of seven points in the second set; and freshman Anastasia Gajica, who had two blocks and two kills in the second set.

The following day, the Lady Vikings came up short in an exciting five-set match with Mt. Alvernia, 19-25, 14-25, 25-21, 29-27, and 7-15.

“This was a thrilling game for everyone involved,” said WHS head coach Lauren Kelly. “We ended up winning the fourth set, after going into overtime more or less, which put us through to a fifth set.

“Although we lost, the team fought really hard,” Kelly continued. “In the first set, Mira Ivanis and Anastasia Gajica each had two kills. Rachel Flynn, Lara Ferarri, Anastasia Gajica, and Sara DeGennaro all got aces in the first set. Captain Sara DeGennaro had a serving streak in the fourth set which helped us win that set.”

Kelly and her crew are scheduled to conclude their season today (Thursday) at Peabody.
