A Perfect “10†for WHS Baseball in Season-Opener
The Winthrop High baseball team opened its season on a positive note with a 10-0 victory over Boston Collegiate Charter School this past Tuesday at Veterans Field.
The contest originally had been scheduled for yesterday (Wednesday), but the schools were able to move the game up a day to avoid Wednesday’s rainy forecast.
“It was a great team effort,†said WHS head coach Mark DeGregorio. “Between the pitching, hitting, and base-running, we were able to execute at a high level. We had a total of six stolen bases which put us in good position all game.â€
The Vikings received a superb pitching effort from Zach Bogusz, who tossed a no-hitter through the five innings of work before the contest was called because of the 10-run mercy rule.
“Zach was able to dominate the strike zone and command his curveball all game,†noted DeGregorio. “He was able to keep the hitters guessing and hit his spots. He was locked-in from the first pitch of the game.â€
Zach’s teammates gave him all the support he would need in the opening inning thanks to a two-run homer by Joe Hayes, who finished with three RBI on the day.
“We did a good job of grinding out at-bats and getting on base,†said DeGregorio. “Colin Kinsella and Peter Silverman did a good job of getting on base consistently at the top of the line-up.
“We also got some timely hitting from Anthony Indrisano and Phil Boncore, who was starting his first varsity game as a freshman at first base,†the coach continued. “Phil showed that the moment was not too much for him as he got a double in his first at-bat and then stole third to help set up another run for us.
“Overall, it was a great team effort and I want to thank the coaches for helping prepare the team for opening day considering we haven’t had a lot of time out on the field this spring due to weather,†DeGregorio added. “They have been consistent in helping coach these young men up and help them get ready for the season. The team’s performance showed that work paid off.â€
The Vikings also received a nice boost with the return to the dugout of assistant coach Frankie Fabiano.
“We still have a long way to go, as we have a tough schedule and need to get ready to play some of our top opponents in the coming days,†DeGregorio added. “We’re ready to get back to work tomorrow to prepare for these upcoming games.â€
The Vikings are scheduled to play at Marblehead tomorrow (Friday) and will entertain Snowden Academy Saturday morning at Veterans Field at 11:00. They will trek to Saugus next Wednesday and will host Salem next Thursday.
Split Decision in Opening Week for WHS Softball
The Winthrop High softball team went 1-for-2 this past week, splitting its first two games of the new season.
The Lady Vikings opened their 2022 campaign with a 13-11 victory over Salem Charter Academy Monday afternoon at the Little League field.
Winthrop plated seven runs in the first inning despite managing only one base hit, a two-RBI single by Sammy Harris, thanks to eight walks and three hit batsmen courtesy of the Salem pitching.
Harris scored a run in the third frame when she drew a walk, moved to second on a ground out by McKenzie Magardo, and eventually came around to score on another ground-out.
In the fourth, Ava Martello drew a walk and Juliana Guzman reached on a bunt on which there also was a throwing error. Another error on a bunt by Juliana Guzman and an error on a grounder by Amelia Spencer brought across Martello and Guzman.
Winthrop added insurance runs in the sixth when Martello and Guzman walked and scored on an error in the outfield.
In the pitching department, Martello tossed four innings, allowing just two hits and four runs, of which three were earned. Magardo finished up in the final three frames.
On Tuesday, the Lady Vikings dropped a 15-3 decision to Saugus.

They wil trek to Marblehead next Wednesday.

Good Start for WHS Boys Lacrosse
The Winthrop High boys lacrosse team, which is competing at the junior varsity level this season, has opened its season in fine fashion.

Robert Rich led the Winthrop offense with five goals with help from freshman Michael Holgerson and junior captain Jack Hayes.
Freshman Steven Linginger stepped up and played goalie in the absence of Hunter Fife (who was sick) and let up only two goals in an excellent performance.
“Our defense has also been playing very well,†said WHS head coach Brian Donnelly. “We played excellent, shut-down, man-to-man, and cleared the ball well with sophomore Dan Thoami, sophomore Donovan Cassidy, and up-and-coming eighth-grader Dylan Hovermale.†Donnelly and his crew travel to Danvers tomorrow (Friday) and will host Medford on Monday on the turf at Miller Field.
