Letters to Editor

Supports Fucillo

Dear Editor,

As a lifelong resident of Winthrop, I’ve noticed an increasing disconnect between the town and its residents.  Whether it is the steady onslaught of complaints around our tremendously high cost of water, growing concerns about the quality of public education during the pandemic, or infrastructure ‘improvements’ that turn an otherwise lovely town square into a parking lot…there seems to be no shared sense of unity or faith in the direction of our beautiful town.  Even during the recent Democratic primary to see who will fill the spot left vacant by Speaker DeLeo, the nastiness and overall tone of the various forums was disheartening, to say the least.  I think one way to stop some of the politics as usual’ is to elect a State Representative who will work to unite us all at the town, district, and state level.

I’ve heard it said that Winthrop will always vote blue; a democratic stronghold that rejects the principles of any other platform. Well, I propose that we think outside the confines of outdated thinking, stereotypes, and party profiling, and look to a fresh perspective that is an independent voice.  As one who hopes to make Winthrop my lifetime residence, I don’t want to echo the complaints of previous generations, but would rather add my voice to a higher standard of expectation; where our elected officials work for ‘us’ and not for their party. With all due respect to Mr.Turco, I believe that the newest generation of voting citizens should reflect a new way of thinking about governance at every level.

I feel that Richard Fucillo, Jr., an independent candidate in the upcoming Special Election on March 30, is that fresh perspective that will usher in a new wave of leadership. As an independent, I trust that he won’t be blinded by party lines or mindlessly conforming to the masses. His young age makes me hopeful that he’s open to new ideas, innovative approaches to compromise, and applying fresh solutions to some of our age-old challenges. He understands the issues of our generation but also those of older residents and wants to address the challenges with accountability and transparency.

On March 30, I will be casting my vote for Richard Fucillo, Jr.  I hope you will consider voting for him too.

Congrats Richard Honan

Dear Editor,

I am writing to congratulate Richard Honan on having been selected as the Massachusetts DAR (MDAR) Outstanding Veteran Volunteer for 2021. The next steps in this process are that the nomination is now being reviewed at the District level (6 New England States and New York). From there, your nomination could be forwarded to the National level, where there will be nominations from each of the state and District of Columbia DAR organizations.

Your achievements in recognizing active military and veterans as a veteran are truly outstanding. Our chapter will be planning a program to honor your contributions at a time when we can meet in person, rather than via zoom.

Typically, the Outstanding Veteran Volunteer is honored at our March State meeting. However, during COVID, nothing is typical! Our March State meeting is being held virtually due to the ongoing COVID mitigations. Therefore, you will be honored and presented with the MDAR Outstanding Veteran Volunteer award at the MDAR Fall State Meeting. You will receive an invitation for either lunch or dinner on Friday, September 17 or lunch on Saturday, September 18. Our chapter would love it if your wife and children could attend, as guests of our chapter.

You will be receiving more information as we get closer to the date. As Regent of the Boston Tea Party Chapter, NSDAR, I wanted to congratulate you on this honor and award that you so richly deserve.

Supports Caruccio

Dear Editor,

I write to express my support for Paul Caruccio who is seeking to become the next person to represent Winthrop as our District’s next State Representative. I have known Paul for many years. He is intelligent, hard working and honest.

As Paul stated in his campaign message, it is his intention to grow jobs and revitalize our business base. As the former owner of Michael’s Hallmark store Paul remembers the days when business was thriving in Winthrop.

Paul has stated he will fight to protect and preserve our communities and families, restore election integrity, fight against increased taxes and reduce spending, waste, fraud and abuse.

It is time to restore a two party system to Beacon Hill. I urge you to vote for Paul Caruccio.

Carol A. DeMio
