Marie Ficaro

Retired legal secretary, member of many Winthrop organizations, former Girl Scout leader

Marie A. Ficaro of Emerson Road, Winthrop, passed away at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on July 21. She was 85 years old.

A resident of Winthrop for more than 57 years, she was employed as a legal secretary for Breakstone, White and Gluck. She was a member of the Cottage Park Yacht Club, the Book Club at the Winthrop Public Library, the Winthrop PTA and a troop leader for the Girl Scouts of America.

Born in East Boston, she was the beloved daughter of the late Eleanor M. (Racana) and Anthony Maragioglio. She was the devoted wife of 64 years to Giacomo ‘Jack” Ficaro and the loving mother of Joanne Joyce and her husband, Frederick of Topsfield, Eleanor Lundy and her husband, James  and Nina Ficaro-Rago, all of Winthrop;  the cherished grandmother of Derek, Jessica, Maria, Olivia and Miriam.

Her funeral was conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 26, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church. Interment followed the mass in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Rita Lambiase

Hotel and restaurant waitress

Rita Lambiase passed away at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on July 23. She was 62 years old.

Born in Torino, Italy, she was the beloved daughter of the late Andrea and Francesco Bavaro. A resident of Winthrop and Revere for many years, she was employed as a waitress working in restaurants and hotels.

She was the devoted wife of Richard Lambiase, the loving mother of Francesca Lambiase and the dear sister of Lucia Bavaro and Maria DiLaurie, both of Revere.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Friday, July 28, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Interment to follow the mass will be in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery. Janice Howard

Retired administrative assistant

Janice M. Howard of Atlantic Street, Winthrop,passed away on July 22. She was 82 years old.

Born in Boston, the beloved daughter of the late Margaret (Jones) and Edward Murdock, she was a resident of Winthrop for the past 52 years and was employed as an administrative assistant for D.R. Howard Inc. until her retirement.

She was the devoted wife of the late Robert J. Howard and the loving mother of Richard Howard of Vermont, Douglas Howard and his wife, Pamela of Saugus, Scott Howard and his wife, Sheryl and Jill Petersen and her husband, Gregg, all of Winthrop. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Her funeral will be conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Thursday, July 27, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 11:30 a.m. Interment to follow the mass will be in Winthrop Cemetery. Joanne Marie Sacco

Loving, caring, and compassionate person, dedicated to family

Joanne Marie (Iannelli) Sacco, loving mother, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 8, at Tidewell Hospice in Port Charlotte, Fla.

A Winthrop resident since 1974, she died after a 20- month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 77 years old.

Dedicated to family, Joanne will always be remembered as a great dancer, a tremendous hostess, a loving, caring and compassionate person, willing to go the extra mile for all those she touched.

The wife of the late James Sacco, she was the loving mother of three sons and their wives: James and Denise Sacco of Bradford, Troy and Joyce Sacco of Nokomis, Fla. and Todd and Alyssa Sacco of Winthrop; seven grandchildren: Derek, Bianca, Elicia, Jillian, Mac, Trevor and Seth.

Born and raised in East Boston, she was the loving daughter of the late Ralph and Elaine Iannelli; caring sister of brothers, John and Ralph Iannelli of East Boston. She is survived by many more nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated July 22 at St. John’s in Winthrop with a private burial.

Carolyn Smoot

Lifelong Winthrop resident

Carolyn (Riley) Smoot, a lifelong resident of Winthrop, passed away peacefully on June 29 in Orlando, Fla. at the home of her daughter, Kristin Alberts and her husband, Daniel Alberts.

Carolyn was employed for many years at Eastern Airlines, as a real estate agent and for many years at the Continental Restaurant until her retirement.

The cherished grandmother of Caitlin Alberts, Carolyn was predeceased by her mother and father, George and Barbara A. Riley of Winthrop and her sister, Barbara Ellen.

She is survived by her sister, Rita Goulian (wife of the late Myron) of Arlington, her brother, George and his wife, Carol, her sister, Maureen and her husband, Jay Ferri  her sister, Debra Moretti, all of Winthrop. Carolyn is also survived by many caring nieces and nephews including her beloved Nephew, Robert Riley. She was also predeceased by her long-time love and companion Anthony (Tony) Marino.

A Memorial Mass in Carolyn’s honor will be celebrated on Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. at Saint Johns Episcopal Church, 222 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, followed by a collation at the Parish Hall.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation.
