The VFP’s bus donation
We’ve often commended the Viking Pride Foundation in the past, but Friday’s ceremony in which the group dedicated the new buses for the Winthrop schools may have been its crowning achievement.
The plan to purchase buses for sports teams had been in the works for years as a means of lessening the costs of transporting Winthrop teams to athletic contests. The sparkling new buses glistened in the winter sun Friday at Miller Field as Council President Jeffrey Turco, School Committee Chairwoman Mary Lou Osborne, Town Manager James McKenna, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Lisi, and Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo all stepped to the podium and praised the non-profit organization for tits effort in purchasing the new buses which will make life easier for the various sports teams. In addition, the schools will be able to use the buses for field trips, lessening those expenses for all students.
It has taken vision, foresight, and hard work to accomplish what the Viking Pride Foundation has been able to do in its existence. We expect other communities soon to follow the lead of the Foundation’s idea to buy buses for permanent use for the athletic teams. Everyone in the Viking Pride Foundation, from the founders, to the board members, to current Chairman Vincent Crossman, deserves a lot of credit for this idea that will save the towns hundreds of thousands of dollars by the time all is said and done.
