That certainly was a dignified and well-administered inauguration ceremony Monday night at the Cummings School Cafetorium for the new Town Council. Town Clerk Carla Vitale gave the oath of office to incoming officials as their proud family members looked on.
Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo and State Sen. Anthony Petruccelli were in attendance and presented citations to outgoing councillors Thomas Reilly, Joseph Ferrino Jr., and Richard Gill. Town Council President Jeffrey Turco accepted the oath as the new leader of the nine-member council. Turco said he was humbled by the support of Winthrop residents and said he’ll try to move the town forward, though he noted, “The economic crisis afflicting our town, state, and nation is almost unprecedented.â€
Turco officiated at his first Council meeting Tuesday night and conducted the council’s agenda in smooth and professional fashion. It also was the first meeting for Precinct 1 Councillor Paul Varone and Councillor-at-Large Larry Powers.
It’s a new era for the Town Council and we wish them well in what is a challenging job in these trying times.
