Arthur Flavin

His Kind and Gentle Demeanor, Willingness To Help Others and Supportive Nature Will Truly Be Missed

Arthur Flavin, beloved father, husband and long-time resident of Winthrop, formerly of South Boston, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2024, nine days after the passing of his cherished wife, Barbara to whom he was married for 68 years.

Arthur entered the United States Coast Guard in 1951, immediately after his graduation from Boston College High School. While there, he served as an electronics instructor at the Coast Guard Training Center in Groton, CT and earned the National Defense Service Medal. He then transitioned to the Coast Guard Reserve in 1954 and joined International Business Machines, where he contributed for 32 years in field engineering, system management and as an instructor. He received numerous awards from IBM, including the President’s Award in both 1978 and 1984. He then worked ten years in Information Systems at the Bank of Boston before retiring in 1997.

As a resident of Winthrop for over 65 years, he was an enthusiastic volunteer for church activities, including serving as President of the Holy Name Society and as a Eucharistic Minister. He loved his home improvement projects, often drawing upon the help and interest from his neighbors, reading and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His kind and gentle demeanor, willingness to help others and supportive nature will truly be missed.

He was the son of the late Patrick J. and Mary (Donovan) Flavin of South Boston,  the father of Arthur John Flavin Junior and his wife, Richelle of Winthrop, Patrick J. and his wife, Denise of West Peabody, James M. and his wife, Dana of Sudbury, Thomas E. of Needham and formerly of Winthrop,  Anne M. and her wife, Kelly Seary of Sudbury and Barbara M. Flanagan and her husband, Thomas of South Glastonbury, CT; brother of the late John Joseph and Mary Flavin of South Boston, Jeremiah Donovan of Quincy and James Gerald Flavin of Port Orchard, WA; cherished grandfather of Alexis Flavin of Melrose, Vanessa Flavin of Winthrop, Ariana Morrow of Holden, Kevin Flavin of Bronxville, NY, Kerianne Flavin of Portland, ME, Stephanie Regenhardt of Watertown, Jessica Flavin of Franklin, Christina Flavin of Somerville, Brian and Alyson Flanagan of South Glastonbury, CT and Declan Seary-Flavin of Sudbury. He is also survived by ten great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to a Celebration of the Lives of Art and Barbara, that will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 15 at Saint Michael the Archangel Parish, St. John the Evangelist Church, 302 Winthrop Street, Winthrop followed by a Mass and Interment at Belle Isle Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Horizons horizonsct.org which supports those with developmental disabilities.
