WHS Boys Soccer Team Tops Arlington Catholic, 4–0

The Winthrop High boys soccer team recorded its first victory of the season with a 4-0 triumph over non-conference opponent Arlington Catholic, a Division 3 team, last Wednesday..

Coach Phil Ronan’s Vikings — who did not post their first “W” in last year’s rebuilding season until their 16th game of the year — were led by senior Lucas Coelho, who scored two goals, and by senior goalkeeper and captain Mateo Martinez, who turned in a solid performance between the pipes to earn the shutout. Also reaching the back of the Cougars’ net for the Vikings were Julian Alvarez and Noah Bayersdorfer.

Winthrop then hosted Gloucester at Miller Field Monday evening in the driving rain and gave the visiting Fishermen, an undefeated D-2 squad, all they could handle before falling by a final score of 2-0.

The contest was nil-nil at the intermission, with the Vikings having several good scoring chances. The Fishermen finally broke through midway through the second half and then added a late tally on a penalty kick.

“The boys are playing terrific soccer for a Division 4 team,” said Ronan. “I know it’s early, but if we can make the state tournament, we could make some noise against the smaller D-4 teams like us.”

Ronan and his crew were scheduled to travel to Danvers yesterday (Wednesday) and will trek to Boston Collegiate Charter School today (Thursday). They will make the long journey to Salem next Wednesday and then to Saugus next Thursday.

WHS Golfers Win Two Matches

The Winthrop High golf team improved to 3-2 on the season with victories over Saugus and Salem this past week

In the match with Saugus last Wednesday at the Winthrop Golf Club (WGC), the Vikings cruised to a  46-26 victory.

“This was a great second win of the season for the team,” said WHS head coach Jack Wallace. Ryan Murphy secured another round for qualifying for the state tournament, shooting a 39 for a 7-2 win over his Sachem counterpart. Sophomore Declan Howard, competing in his first varsity match, contributed four points to the Viking cause. Louk Belghiti came through with a big victory at the #2 spot.

On Tuesday, the Vikings moved over the .500 mark with a 48-24 triumph over Salem at the WGC.  “The team handled the wind and wetness very well,” noted Wallace.

Among the highlights for the Vikings were senior Joey Rich winning his match, 6 1/2 to 2 1/2;  senior captain Eli Wickham also securing 6 1/2 points; Nikita Rossi continuing his strong freshman campaign by posting another victory; junior Dylan Sykes with a 9-0 victory to wrap up the #8 spot; and senior Jake Galuris with a victory over his Witch counterpart.

“These two wins in a row give us a lot of momentum heading into our next matches,” said Wallce, whose crew was scheduled to host Swamposcott yesterday (Wednesday) and then travel to Peabody Meadows today (Thursday) and to Saugus at Cedar Glen on Monday. They will return to the WGC to host Marbelhead next Wednesday and St. Mary’s of Lynn next Thursday.

WHS Girls Soccer Hosts Salem Wednesday Night

The Winthrop High girls soccer team will be playing under the lights on the turf at Miller Field when coach Stacey Martucci and her crew host Northeastern Conference South Division rival Salem at 6:00 next Wednesday evening.

Prior to the match with Salem, the Lady Vikings will have a pair of non-league encounters when they travel to White Stadium in Dorchester to take on Boston Latin Academy today (Thursday) and then will entertain Excel Academy Monday afternoon at 3:30 at Miller.

This past Monday Winthrop came out on the short end of a 7-2 decision at Gloucester.

“They came right out and scored, and from that point on we were on our heels,” said Martucci. “We held them to 3-1 at the half with a nice goal by freshman Angela Coscia. In the second half we netted a second goal on a great cross by captain Hannah Parker and junior Talia Martucci was there to connect to make it 3-2.

“But we just couldn’t find a rhythm long enough to hold them off,”  noted Martucci  “These girls are working hard and keeping it positive and energetic despite the scores.”

WHS Volleyball Continues To Work Hard

Although the Winthrop high volleyball team dropped its two contests this past week, head coach Lauren Kelly said her team is working hard to improve.

“It was a bit of a tough week,” said Kelly. “But we’re hopeful for the season ahead. We are working hard in practice and are looking forward to the rest of the week when we play Salem and East Boston.”

Last Wednesday the Lady Vikings dropped a 3-0 decision to Marblehead. “Sophomore Anastasia Gajica got us our two first points with a back-to-back block and kill, and Adrianna Ferrara helped us out in the third set with some great digs,” noted Kelly.

This past Monday Wimthrop came up short by a 3-0 score to Mystic Valley. “In the second set, Mira Ivanis had a successful serving streak of four serves,” Kelly noted. “In the last set, junior Samantha Correa and senior Emily Maddalone helped tremendously with great passes and digs.”

Kelly and her crew have a busy week ahead with five matches in nine days. They were scheduled to host Salem yesterday (Wednesday) and East Boston tomorrow (Friday). They will have a chance for revenge against Mystic Valley on Monday at the WHS gym and will travel to Masconomet next Tuesday. They will return home to entertain Saugus next Thursday.
