Boys Soccer Team Defeats Salem, 2-0

The young Winthrop High boys soccer team, which has been working hard and improving since the start of the season, broke into the win column with a 2-0 victory over Northeastern Conference rival Salem last Thursday evening at Salem.

Fabiano Rodriguez and Loert Mana reached the back of the Witches’ net to provide the offense, while captain Mateo Martinez kept a clean sheet to earn the shutout in goal.

“The guys played another complete game,” said WHS head coach Phil Ronan. “This

was a total team effort in all phases of the game.

“I am very excited about next year,” Ronan continued. “The experience gained by the young players, especially getting a win, shows them they can win and what it takes to succeed at this level. We accomplished what we had set out to do from the beginning of the season — to get better as the year went on and finish strong.

“I’m extremely happy for them. It’s huge for the returning players,” Ronan added.

WHS Girls Soccer Wraps Up Season

The Winthrop High girls soccer team concluded its 2022 season with a pair of contests against Northeastern Conference rivals Marblehead and Peabody last week.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t come out with wins against them, but this team never gave up,” said WHS head coach Tracey Martucci. “Although they knew that we were not going to make the post-season, the team worked hard against the tough competition we faced.”

The final outcome showed the Lady Vikings falling short to Marblehead, 3-0, and Peabody, 5-1. In the latter contest, junior Kaylee Farrell, assisted by senior Malin Flatner, scored the final goal of Winthrop’s 2022 campaign.

“We ended our season at 6-11-1 after graduating the biggest senior class I’ve ever coached last year with 14 seniors,” said Martucci, whose program is facing another big turnover year with the Lady Vikings saying goodbye to 12 seniors.
