WHS Girls Cross Country Outruns Salem, Salem Academy

The Winthrop High girls and boys cross-country teams trekked to Salem last Thursday to take on Salem High and Salem Charter School on the three-mile course on Winter Island.

On the girls’ side, April Ferguson outran the field to finish in first place in a fast time of 23:00.

Teammate Libby Carney was the next Lady Viking across the line, sprinting down the stretch to come in third place overall. Winthrop’s Sage Calinda was the next runner, coming in fourth spot overall with a personal-best time of 27:33.

Freshman Sophia Lindinger, who also ran a personal-best time of 28:07, finished in fifth place overall. Lucy Giraud then earned Winthrop the victory, finishing with a time of 36:41.

For the boys’  team, Tim Vargus turned in a fine performance to finish in third place overall with a clocking of 20:49. Teammate John Rice came across in eighth overall in 24:01 and Ryan Cash finished in ninth overall in 26:56.

“Both the girls and boys did a fantastic job,” said WHS head coach Mark D’Amico. “They have been improving all season and it showed in this race.”

D’Amico and his crew were scheduled to race at Swampscott yesterday (Wednesday) and will trek to Bradley Palmer State Park to face Masconomet next Wednesday.

WHS Boys Soccer Ties Malden, 1-1

The Winthrop High boys soccer team earned a dramatic 1-1 tie in a contest at non-league opponent Malden this past Saturday.

The host Golden Tornados grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening half on a penalty kick and appeared headed to victory as the clock wound down. However, with just seconds to go, Viking Loert Mana delivered a free kick that bounced to Luke Riley, who beat the Malden goalie to bring the contest to level. The goal was Luke’s first of the season.

“We started off well, but at half it was 1-0 Malden,” said WHS head coach Kyle Gagin. “In the second half both teams had their chances, but we were able to score at the last second. It was great to see the team fight right  to the end to earn the point.”

Last Thursday the Vikings came up short in a 3-0 loss to Northeastern Conference rival Marblehead, a team that the Vikings had defeated in their first meeting earlier this season.

“We started off slowly and couldn’t find our rhythm vs. Marblehead,” said Gagin. “It was 2-0 at half. Their first goal was a penalty kick and the second was an own-goal. Marblehead was able to get a third in the second half thanks to another own-goal. We didn’t play well and the two own-goals didn’t help.”

Gagin and his squad have a busy week ahead with four games in seven days. They will host non-league opponent Northeast Regional this afternoon (Thursday) on the turf at Miller Field. They will trek to the Manning Bowl to take on Lynn Classical — which is a member of the Greater Boston League — Saturday evening at 6:00 and then will travel to Masconomet Regional on Monday and to Gloucester on Wednesday.
