WHS Girls Soccer Improves to 5-0

The Winthrop High girls soccer team captured three victories this past week to improve to 5-0 for their Fall II season.

Last Tuesday the Vikings shut out Northeast Regional, 5-0. Winthrop grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half thanks to a goal by the Vikings’ all-time leading scorer, Maura Dorr, who was assisted by her twin sister and fellow senior captain Jenna.

“We had a lot of shots in the first half, but just couldn’t connect with the net, other than Maura’s goal,” said WHS head coach Tracey Martucci.

However, the Vikings found their scoring touch after the intermission, with Maura Dorr (assisted by Grace Arena), senior captain Grace Galuris (assisted by Mia Martucci), and Maddie Stiglets (two goals, the first assisted by Sammy Dimento) all reaching the back of the Northeast net.

The teams met again the following evening, with Winthrop once again prevailing, this time by a score of 3-1.

After a scoreless first half, Winthrop broke through with goals by Maura Dorr (assisted by Mia Martucci) and Emma Holmes (unassisted) boosting the Vikings into a 2-0 lead. Northeast broke through with a goal in injury time to make it a 2-1 affair, but Maura Dorr (assisted by Summer Tallent) put the game away with her second goal of the game.

“We had a lot of breakaways that we couldn’t connect with,” noted Martucci. “Their goalkeeper really played great. I have to give a shout-out to my goalie, Miya Grein, who played great as well, and my defense, who held it down in the backfield.”

This past Monday the Vikings traveled to Lynn Tech and came back with a 4-0 triumph. Maura Dorr reached the back of the Tech net for two goals and Mia Martucci and Stiglets both added markers to put the game on ice.

Martucci and her crew were scheduled to host Tech yesterday (Wednesday) in a rematch. They are off until next Thursday (April 1) when they will trek to West Roxbury High to meet Boston Latin.

Boys Soccer Tops Lynn Tech, 2-0

The Winthrop High boys soccer team improved to 2-1-1 in their Fall II season with a 2-0 triumph over the Lynn Tech Tigers Monday afternoon at Miller Field.

After a nil-nil first half, the Vikings, who had a slight advantage in possession in the opening half, came out with renewed energy and broke the deadlock at the 13-minute mark.

Juan Guauque was taken down outside the box, giving the Vikings a free kick.. Sophomore Esteban Alvarez delivered a cross into the box. Sophomore Loert Mana was the first to the ball and flicked a pass to Guauque, who placed the ball past the Tech keeper for his fourth goal of the season.

Winthrop then made it 2-0 a few minutes later. Guauque stole the ball from a Tiger opponent and sent a nice through ball to Alvarez, who was breaking past the Tech defense, and who then beat the Tiger keeper.

Senior captain and goalkeeper Augie Cherico recorded his first career shutout in the net for the Vikings.

“Defensively we played well as a team,” said WHS head coach Kyle Gagin. “Our center backs, juniors Zane Bower and JD Parker, kept everyone focused and disciplined throughout the game.”

The victory over Tech was preceded by a 2-2 tie with the Northeast Regional Golden Knights last Wednesday. Northeast had defeated Winthrop the day before, but the Vikings bounced back to earn the deadlock in the rematch.

“Although we had a slow start, this game was better than when we played Northeast the previous day,” noted Gagin..

Winthrop trailed 2-1 at the half, with the Viking goal coming from Guauque with an assist from sophomore Anan Cherki.

The duo then teamed-up again after the intermission, with Guauque notching his second goal of the game with another assist from Cherki.

Cherico made a great save late in the contest to preserve the tie.

“Bower and Parker had great games defensively and senior Youssef Benchikhi had a great game off the bench,” Gagin added.

The Vikings were scheduled to meet Lynn Tech in a rematch yesterday (Wednesday) and then will engage in a home-and-home series with Greater Lawrence next Monday (5:00 at Miller Field) and Wednesday.
