Catherine Mario

East Boston resident

Catherine M. “Kay” (Tobin) Mario, beloved wife of the late Christy Mario, died in East Boston on September 21.

She was the mother of Michael of Boston’s North End, Joseph of East Boston, Christopher and his wife, Cathy, of Chelmsford, Martin and his wife, Antoinetta, of Winchester, Maryann and her husband, Richard Zaluski, of East Boston, Cathy and her husband, William Redler, of Winchester; sister of Mary “May” Baglio and her husband, Jack, of East Boston; daughter-in-law of Antonetta (Caserta) Mario of Peabody’ grandmother of Andrea, Thomas, Ryan, Nolan, Christy, Mariah, Christy Elizabeth, Angelo and Martin; great-grandmother of Emma and Jack; and the aunt of many.

Her funeral will be held from the Magrath Funeral Home, 325 Chelsea St. at Day Square, East Boston, on Friday morning at 9, followed by a Funeral Mass in the Sacred Heart Church at 10 o’clock. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Thursday, from 3 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory to Sacred Heart Parish Religious Education Center, 303 Paris St., East Boston, MA 02128 would be appreciated.

 

Anne Tulipani

Past Venerable of Winthrop Ladies Lodge Sons of Italy

Anne R. (Flaherty) Tulipani of Malden, formerly of Winthrop and East Boston, died September 20 at the Hammersmith House Nursing Care Center in Saugus, after a long illness.

Born in Norwalk, Conn., daughter of the late Carrie (Hendricks) and Edward Flaherty, she was a longtime resident of Winthrop and East Boston. Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a secretary by the John Hancock Insurance Company. She was a Past Venerable of the Winthrop Ladies Lodge Order of Sons of Italy.

She was the former wife of the late Joseph Tulipani; devoted mother of Joanne and Richard Italiano of Saugus, Robert  and Diane Tulipani of Melrose, Irene and Paul Cyr of North Billerica, Gina and Stuart Mercer of Somerville and the late Joseph Tulipani; dear sister of Carol Selinski of New York; and she is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Her funeral will be conducted from the Ernest P. Caggiano & Son Funeral Home, 147 Winthrop St., Winthrop, today, Thursday, at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be in Winthrop Cemetery.

Vincenza Aresco

East Boston resident

Vincenza (Rosa) Aresco of East Boston died on September 20.

She was the beloved wife of the late Vittorio Aresco; loving mother of Angelo and his wife, Rosa, of East Boston, Sebastiano “Yano” and his wife, Paula, of Stoneham, Anthony “Tony Tomato” and his wife, Kathy, of North Reading, Carmelo and his wife, MaryAnn, of Winthrop, William and his wife, Kerry, of New Hampshire, Joseph of East Boston, John of East Boston, Frank of Malden, Richard of East Boston, Anna Aresco Pisaturo and her husband, Louie, of Revere, the late Salvatore and his surviving wife, Ellen, of Revere, the late Augustino “Gus” and the late Robert; cherished grandmother of 23 and great-grandmother of 13. She is also survived by two sisters and two brothers in Italy.

Her funeral will be held from The Rapino Memorial Home, 9 Chelsea St., (Maverick Sq.) East Boston today, Thursday, at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, Brooks Street, East Boston at 10 a.m. Services will conclude with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. Alfred Greenlaw, 64

Worked for USI Securities of Boston

Alfred B. Greenlaw of Winthrop died on September 20. He was 64 years old.

Born in Revere, he attended school in the Malden School System, enlisted in the US Army and served two years as a medical corpsman. Upon discharge, he went into the security business and was employed by USI securities of Boston.

He was the dear son of the late Arthur W. and Olive McIlroy Greenlaw and is survived by a brother, William Greenlaw of Middleborough, and three sisters, Roberta Greenlaw of Florida, Alyce Hemstreet of Connecticut and Ruth Greenlaw of Winthrop. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Arthur and Charles Greenlaw.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Joseph R. Frazier Funeral Home of Winthrop. Burial was private.

Eileen McCarthy, 62

Secretary

Eileen A. McCarthy of Wayland, formerly of Winthrop, died at her home on September 17. She was 62 years old.

A graduate of Winthrop High School, Class of 1964, she attended Boston University and then graduated from Northeastern University. She was a member of the Massachusetts Chapter of the Marfan’s Support Group and worked as a secretary for Dun and Bradstreet Investment Corporation.

Born in Winthrop, the beloved daughter of the late John and Ruth (Kyle) McCarthy, she was the devoted sister of John McCarthy and his wife, Pamela, of Winthrop and Kathleen McCarthy-Glasson and her husband, Kenneth, of Naples, Fla. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were by the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home of Winthrop. Burial was in Winthrop Cemetery.

Michael Gutowski, 45

Baker

Michael D. Gutowski of Winthrop, formerly of Chelsea, died on September 17 at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington. He was 45 years old.

A baker who was employed by several area bakeries, he was born in Chelsea, son of Stanley A. Gutowski and the late Larraine (Le Cain) Gutowski. He was the husband of Kathleen (McDonald) Gutowski and the beloved father of Maureen Gutowski of Winthrop and the brother of Beth Posey of Maine and the late Stanley T. Gutowski.

Memorial services will be held in St. John’s Episcopal Church, corner of Bowdoin and Buchanan streets, Winthrop on Friday at 3 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Mary Brown, 91

Winthrop resident

Mary E. (Maloney) Brown of Winthrop died at the Don Orione Nursing Home in East Boston on September 16. She was 91 years old.

She was the beloved wife of the late James W. Brown Sr. Born in Somerville, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Bridget (Flanagan) Maloney; devoted mother of James W. “Jim” Brown Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Saugus and Mary L. Radziewicz and her husband, John, of Rowley; adored grandmother of Stephen and Melanie Brown, Sheila Radziewicz, Lisa Tucker and Christine LeBlanc; great-grandmother of Georgia LeBlanc and Evan Tucker; sister of the late Gertrude Chisholm and Augustine “Gus” Maloney; and she is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were by the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home of Winthrop. Burial was in Winthrop Cemetery.

Bessie Davis, 97

Lifetime member of Temple Tifereth Israel

Bessie (Smith) Davis of Boynton Beach, Fla., formerly of Winthrop, died on September 17. She was 97 years old.

Mrs. Davis was a lifetime member of Temple Tifereth Israel of Winthrop. In 2005, the temple’s main sanctuary was named in honor of George and Bess Davis. She was a member of the Winthrop Golf Club, where she had two holes-in-one.

She was the beloved wife of the late George Davis; devoted mother of David Davis of Peabody and Gary Davis and his wife, Mona, of New York, NY; loving grandmother of Marc Davis, Richard Davis, Wendy Davis, Amy Josephson, Elisa Hecht and great-grandmother of Dani, Sam, Jenna and Carly.

She was the dear sister of the late Hyman Smith, Harold Smith and Fred Smith.

Graveside services were held at the Temple Tifereth Israel of Winthrop Cemetery, Everett, with arrangements by Levine Chapels, Brookline. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Temple Tifereth Israel.

 

Jim (James) Hawco

Business owner

Jim (James) Hawco, formerly of Winthrop, died on September 10 after a seven-month battle with cancer.

Mr. Hawco was a 37-year resident of Florida and a USAF Communications radio operator/communications. He owned and operated his own business in the spindle motors and printed circuit board industry for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty (Gamgene) Hawco, of Port Charlotte, Florida. He was the son of Louis and Winifred (Connors) Hawco; brother of the late Mary Robinson of Maryland, Loretta English of Winthrop, Lillian Simmons of San Antonio, Texas, Louis Hawco of Winthrop, Anna Acone of Winthrop and Paul Hawco of Oregon.

He is also survived by his siblings, Tom Hawco of Lincoln, Nebraska, Cecelia Belliveau of Largo, Florida, and Fran Wall of Winthrop, Karen Corbett and her husband, Deane, of Arizona, Kathy Corbett and Larry of North Carolina, and Joyce Billet and husband, Brian, of Vienna, Virginia. He is also remembered by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a great-grandson.

Services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church, Port Charlotte, Florida, on September 26 at 11 a.m. Prayers for this good man are requested.

 

Doris Nolan, 86

Worked for Department of the Navy and in Civil Defense

Doris E. (Cox) Nolan of Lynn died on September 14 in Salem Hospital after a brief illness. She was 86 years old.

Wife of the late Clifford D. Nolan, she was born in Winthrop, daughter of the late Richard and Lily (Jacobs) Cox. She was raised in Winthrop and was a graduate of Winthrop High School, where she was valedictorian of the Class of 1940. She also attended Harvard University.

Mrs. Nolan lived in Bath, Maine, Virginia and Revere and lived in Lynn since 1984. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and watching game shows on television. She loved her cat, Shadow. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Nolan was a secretary to the Secretary of the Navy and worked for the Department of the Navy in the Pentagon. Later, she was involved in Civil Defense.

She is survived by a daughter, Cynthia A. McCarthy, and her husband, John, of Lynn; four grandchildren, Kathleen D. McCarthy of Jamaica Plain, Sean P., Ryan R. and Maryanne McCarthy, all of Lynn. She leaves a great grandson, Connor McCarthy. She also leaves a sister, Barbara McEachern, of Winthrop and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Richard Cox, Lillian Cox, Edith Riley and Ruth Donovan

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Solimine, Landergan and Richardson Funeral Home of Lynn. Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
