WHS flag football wins playoff opener
The Winthrop High flag football team won its first-round contest in the Northeast Division playoffs with a 34-0 triumph over the Peabody 2 team last week
“We had great performances from Josie Barry, Tori, Bates, Marwa Mimouni, and Marissa MacMullen,” said WHS head coach John Cross.
The Lady Vikings then advanced to the next round, where they met first-place St. Mary’s of Lynn, and came up on the short end of a 26-0 decision.
“It was a tough way to go out, but it was a great sophomore season for our program and we look forward to year three in 2026,” said Cross.
Cappuccio is 10th in 100 at Meet of Champions
Winthrop High star sprinter Nicholas Cappuccio concluded his illustrious Viking track and field career this past weekend at the MIAA Meet of Champions that was held at Fitchburg State University.
Nicholas qualified for both the 100 and 200 meter events thanks to his fourth-place finishes in both at the Division 5 State Meet the previous week.
In the 100, Nick came across the line in 10th place with a sprint of 11.04, which was just 0.09 shy of the eight-place spot that would have qualified him for the finals The final winning time was 10.66.
In the 200, Cappuccio’s clocking of 22.39 placed him 22nd in the competition. The eventual winning time was 21.56.
