Winthrop High student-athletes place American flags to honor town’s veterans
Winthrop High School student-athletes volunteered their time to place flags at the gravesites of war veterans Saturday at the Winthrop Cemetery.

at the Winthrop Cemetery.
Veterans Officer Phil Ronan said of the outstanding project held in observance of Memorial Day, “We had a wonderful turnout today. I’m thrilled that I was able to partner with the Athletic Director, Mark DeGregorio, and we had multiple teams and athletes participating today. It’s a great way for the community, especially the student-athletes, to see the sacrifices that were made by all the people from the Town of Winthrop and realize how many people served our country. We hope that today’s flag placement effort becomes an annual tradition in Winthrop. I also want to thank Rep. Jeff Turco and Eric Reidister of Sen. Lydia Edwards’ Office for their support of all veteran-related events.”
Rep. Turco commented, “Athletic Director Mark DeGregorio and Veterans Officer Phil Ronan deserve great praise for taking the time to lead this effort. It’s important to teach the students in our community the sacrifice and what Memorial Day means. The students’ effort in placing flags at soldiers’ graves – I think it’s a true testament to the commitment this town has to our veterans and those who died in service to the country. It’s a great teaching moment for our kids, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
