Animal lover and devout Catholic
Mary Ann (Reese) Andre of Winthrop, formerly of Las Vegas, NV., passed away at home on Wednesday, July 17, 202, after a long illness at the age of 82.
Mary Ann was born in Boston at the Carney Hospital to John and Josephine Reese on July 13, 1942 and was raised in Winthrop with her siblings: John, Judith, Josephine, and Louise.
She attended St. John Elementary School and then Winthrop Public High School graduating with the Class of 1960. From there she began her career with the Department of Defense and relocated to Las Vegas, NV. While with the Department of Defense, she assisted in National Security operations and provided essential services to military bases across the world.
While home back in Winthrop, Mary Ann met the love of her life, Arthur George Andre, and they were married in April of 1981 spending many years together until his passing in 2015.
Mary Ann was a devout Catholic and a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and Winthrop’s Catholic Woman’s Club. She was also a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 40 years.
In Mary Ann’s free time, she enjoyed walking her dog and talking strolls at the local beaches and lakes. Mary Ann also had a love for all animals especially her cats.
The loving daughter of the late John and Josephine Reese, she was the beloved wife of the late Arthur George Andre; cherished sister to Louise (Reese) and her husband, Charles Warwick of Winthrop and the late John Q. Reese, Judith A. Riggs, and Josephine DiBiccari. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
In Mary Ann’s free time, she enjoyed walking her dog and talking strolls at the local beaches and lakes. Mary Ann also had a love for all animals especially her cats. May she rest in peace.
Family and friends honored Mary Ann’s life by gathering at the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home, 971 Saratoga Street, East Boston on Wednesday, July 24th for a visitation immediately followed by in-house prayer service. Burial with her parents will be private at a later date in Winthrop Cemetery.

Joseph Sullivan
Retiree of Boston Edison and Boston Naval Shipyard
Joseph Sullivan of Winthrop and Freedom, New Hampshire passed away at home on July 20, 2024. He was 80 years old.
Joe retired from Boston Edison and the Boston Naval Shipyard. He enjoyed many years summering in Freedom, New Hampshire and wintering in Naples, Florida. He loved playing hockey, skiing, scuba diving, boating and golf. He was also his son’s hockey coach for the North Shore Raiders Hockey Team.
Joe married his high school sweetheart, Cindy and together they raised three children who he adored. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
The beloved husband of Cynthia (Frizzell), he was the devoted father of Deborah McCarthy and her husband, Brian of Danvers, Sean Sullivan of Winthrop and the late Cheryl Bruno and her husband, Frank; adored grandfather of Kenadie McCarthy; dear brother of Georgia LaFortone of Hampton, NH, Diane Leone and her husband, Carmen of Winthrop and the late Donald Sullivan. He was the son of the late Mary (Quinlan) and F. Joseph Sullivan and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The funeral mass was celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church, Winthrop on Wednesday, July 24. Services concluded with the interment in the Cross Street section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Elizabeth Catanese
Former employee of Suffolk Downs
Elizabeth “Betty” M (Gallo) Catanese of Revere, formerly of East Boston, died at home on July 19 surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
The beloved wife of the late Anthony Joseph Catanese, she was the dear sister of the late Charlotte DeSimone and her husband, Frederick DeSimone Jr. of Revere; devoted aunt of Liza Internicola and her husband, Daniel of Winthrop, Erica Capogreco and her husband, Robert “Chicky” and Frederick DeSimone III, all of East Boston and cherished Great Aunt of Michalena, Lola, and Antonio. She is also survived by many loving cousins and friends. Betty was born in Boston on June 1st, 1946, to the late Ralph and Yolanda (Andriotti) Gallo. She was a loving and devoted wife, sister, aunt and friend.
Betty was also a longtime employee of Suffolk Downs and was well known in the community as a member of the Winthrop Catholic Ladies Club and she was also active in the Winthrop, Revere and Saugus Senior Centers. A former member of the Winthrop Ladies Bowling League, she was an avid supporter of EBARC, WINARC and the Revere League.
Family and friends will honor Betty’s life by gathering at the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home, 971 Saratoga St., East Boston on Saturday July 27th at 10:30 a.m. before leaving in funeral procession to St. John the Evangelist Church, Winthrop Street, Winthrop. John M. Biggio
Founder of The John M. Biggio Insurance Agency, long active in many town committees
John M Biggio , a lifelong resident of Winthrop, passed away on Saturday July 20, 2024 at the age of 93.
Born in Boston, John was the youngest son of Rose M. (Fopiano) and Andrew A. Biggio. He attended and graduated from the Winthrop School System. He continued his education graduating from Boston University with an Associates of Arts degree and then Suffolk University with a Bachelor’s Degree.
John was working in the insurance business when in 1958 he and Mary Sharkey were married. Within the next four busy years, he and Mary welcomed three children and started The John M. Biggio Insurance Agency from their home. He considered one of his greatest achievements to be his Agency work which is now under the direction of his son John, daughter Marie Biggio Randolph and grand-son Kevin Randolph. John’s eldest son, Andrew oversees his own Insurance Company in Boston.
John was quoted in the Winthrop Transcript in a 2002 article about his business, “We pride ourselves on P.S. Personal Service”. He also said, regarding his children “They will continue to do the splendid job they are doing now. It’s every person’s dream to see their children take over what you started.”
John is survived by his wife Mary K. Biggio, son Andrew A. Biggio, daughter Marie Biggio-Randolph and her husband Kenneth and John E, Biggio and his wife, Heather Oliver Biggio. In addition, he leaves four grand-children: Andrew M Biggio and his wife, Carly, John R. Randolph, Kevin C. Randolph and his fiancé, Anna Rubin and DMD Kristin M. Randolph and two great-grandchildren, Andrew V. Biggio and Charles J. Biggio, all of Winthrop. John was predeceased by his brothers: Andrew who was killed in Italy during WWII and Alphonsus who passed away in 2001.
Throughout his life John was active in many local clubs and town affairs (many political). He was a longtime Town Meeting Member, Town Insurance Committee, Democratic Town Committee and Winthrop Hospital Trustee. He was a member of Winthrop Lodge #1078 and former member of the Pleasant Park and Cottage Park Yacht Clubs.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Thursday, July 25 from 4 to 7 p.m;. The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Friday, July 26 at 9 a.m; followed by a funeral mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Services will conclude with the interment in the Cross Street section of Winthrop Cemetery.
