Stephen Rogers was officially sworn in as Winthrop’s newest Deputy Police Chief during last week’s town council meeting.
The long-time Winthrop Police Department fixture was promoted from lieutenant to fill the opening created when former Deputy Chief John Goodwin was promoted to chief following the retirement of Terence Delehanty.
“It gives me great pleasure to chair this meeting and to be able to see Stephen Rogers getting sworn in as our new deputy chief,” said Council President Jim Letterie. “Steve has been incredible for the town for so many years in his day-to-day duties, but what I look at the most is all he’s done for the youth of this town, especially with the Explorers Program and the Friday Nights Out with the kids down at the gym. He’s done so much as a coach for hockey and baseball and other youth sports.
“All that is good about Winthrop is personified in Stephen Rogers, so I want to congratulate him.”
Rogers has served in the department for over 30 years, working as the supervisor of the criminal investigations unit, as well as being the senior advisor for the Winthrop Police Explorer Post #99 for more than two decades.
“We’ve given up one guy who bleeds Winthrop blue for another guy who bleeds Winthrop blue,” said Goodwin, referring to former Chief Delehanty. “In my career, I’ve never seen anybody more committed and more dedicated. We’re going to take a great department and make it greater.”
Town Clerk Denise Quist swore in Rogers as the new deputy chief, and he was pinned by his wife Kim.
