WIHA’s Strawberry Festival Is Saturday

The Winthrop Improvement & Historical Association (WIHA) will hold its 109th annual Strawberry Festival this Saturday afternoon, June 17th (rain date: June 18th), on the grounds of the historic Deane Winthrop House at 40 Shirley St. from 2-6 p.m.

The Strawberry Festival traditionally is the social event of the spring season, as well as a harbinger of the coming summer season. It’s a great opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones, all while enjoying some delicious  strawberry shortcake. In addition to serving the signature Strawberry Shortcake, this year’s festival will feature select craft beers from the Drop Zone Brewery and strawberry daiquiris.

Tours of the historic 375-year-old Deane Winthrop House, which is one of the oldest wood-frame houses in the country and the oldest continuously lived-in home in the United States, will be available. There will be Strawberry Festival raffles, the Boston Scottish Fiddle Orchestra will provide live music, and there will be fun activities for the kids.

The Strawberry Festival, which dates back to 1912, is the chief fundraiser by the WIHA, which is charged with preserving the historic home of Deane Winthrop, who was the sixth son of Governor John Winthrop, and we urge all of our fellow residents to support the WIHA in its preservation efforts.

Tickets, which are $10.00, are available at Webster First Federal Credit Union, the Winthrop Public Library, Shirley True Value Hardware, Woodside Ace Hardware, the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce, The Winthrop Book Depot and Café, Simon’s Winthrop BookStore, Salon Luxo, Swetts Liquors, The Meat Market, the E.B. Newton Clock Tower Gallery, and The Senior Center.
