Eruzione’s ‘Miracle’ Mentioned on CBS-TV’s Canadian Open Telecast

Those watching the CBS-TV broadcast of the RBC Canadian Open golf tournament Sunday heard mention of Mike Eruzione’s game-winning goal against the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics.

When golfer CT Pan was lining up a shot from off the green on the 18th hole and needed to sink it to tie for the lead, the CBS announcers, Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman, invoked Al Michaels’ famous call at the end of the USA-Soviet Union game, “Do You Believe In Miracles?”

“One of the greatest calls of all time,” said Immelman.

Pan came up short of making the “miraculous” shot, but ultimately Nick Taylor sank a 72-foot eagle putt on the fourth playoff hole to become the first Canadian golfer to win his national open in 69 years.

We understand Winthrop’s Olympic gold medalist was watching the golf telecast and smiled at the reference to what Sports Illustrated called, “the greatest sports moment of the 20th century.”
