Winthrop Center Holiday Lighting Nov. 25

Come join residents for the Annual Holiday Lighting on Nov 25 that marks the kick-off of the holiday season in Winthrop where the center is lit up to make a twinkly wonderland. Beginning at 4:00pm, there will be performances and demonstrations from local groups, local vendors, family crafts and activities, as well as photos with Santa who will light up the center promptly at 5:30pm. The event will continue until 7:00pm so everyone can enjoy the lights. This year the annual host, the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce, is happy to partner with the Winthrop Foundation, Winthrop Town Hall, Massport and several amazing businesses and organizations who’ve made generous contributions towards the cost of lighting the lights. If you are interested in attending the event, or making a contribution towards the lights, please visit the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce social media pages, or find them on GoFundMe.

The Pilgrim Virgin Statue Coming to St. Michael the Archangel

A statue known around the world as the Pilgrim Virgin Statue will come to St. Michael the Archangel Parish on Saturday November 19. Standing 42” tall, it depicts Mary, who is regarded as the Mother of all humanity. The statue hails originally from Fatima in Portugal and has travelled around the globe for close to 70 years. Many miracles have been attributed to the statue, including medical cures and countless conversions.

An opportunity for prayer will begin at 8:00am at the church, located at 320 Winthrop Street in Winthrop, and will include a Mass at 9:00am, a presentation about the message of Fatima, confessions and Eucharistic Adoration, and a short procession. Visitors are invited to come for all, or part, of the day, which concludes at 1:00pm. The day’s itinerary can be found at stjohnswinthrop.org

Many miracles linked to the statue come most likely from the fact that, decades ago, when the bishop of Fatima gave the statue for pilgrimages, he prayed that the spirit of Mary would accompany the statue wherever it was honored.
