The Winthrop health department is excited to announce its “5,000 steps to 5,000 Miles” walking program. 5,000 steps is the equivalent of 2.5 miles, and this program is designed to encourage individuals and families to get out and walks to improve their health and well-being. It is also organized in conjunction with Town Manager James McKenna’s Walk Winthrop.
The six-week program will begin on August 1 and end on September 12. An informational meeting will be held at the Joseph Harvey Hearing Room at Town Hall on Thursday, August 1 at 4:30 p.m.
The $10 enrollment fee will include a t-shirt and awards night celebration. The first 100 participants will also receive a pedometer and log-book to track their miles and the program will be open to individuals over 18 and family groups.
The objective is to put the pedometer on in the morning and keep it on until bedtime to see how many miles you walk in a day. A listing of walking paths and their mileage will also be provided. Applications will be available at the meeting on August 1st and also at the Health Department office in Town Hall Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Pets are also encouraged to participate in the program and a sponsorship feature will be offered for those who wish to participate, with all proceeds benefiting the “No More Homeless Pets” program.
