Staff Report
A power outage that affected a sizeable portion of Winthrop this past Saturday was caused by a utility accident in neighboring Revere.
At approximately 1:24 pm on February 28, a 25-year-old worker for Michels Power, Inc. was electrocuted while working on elevated lines at 30 Railroad Avenue. The incident resulted in a loud electrical discharge and a subsequent blackout across the area, including much of Winthrop.
The victim was lowered to the ground by co-workers, where a bystander—a nurse—jumped a barbed-wire fence to provide emergency aid until first responders arrived. Revere Fire crews had to cut through a security fence to reach the scene near the railroad tracks.
The worker was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital and is currently in stable condition. Power was restored to Winthrop residents by 3:00 pm. Revere Police commended the nurse for her quick actions, noting that the incident remains under review.
