WHS boys soccer are co-champs of NEC South Division
The Winthrop High boys soccer team has gone where no Viking team has gone before in the history of the program — coach Phil Ronan’s 2025 squad is the co-champion of the South (Lynch) Division of the Northeastern Conference after earning a 1-1 tie with NEC North (Dunn) Division foe Marblehead this past Monday evening under the lights on Miller Field at Robert DeFelice Stadium.
In addition to capturing a share of an NEC title for the first time ever, the Vikings finished with the best regular-season record (10-4-4) and best winning percentage in the program’s history.
Winthrop shared the NEC South crown with Swampscott, with both teams sporting 7-4-2 records in the division. The Vikings dropped a 2-1 decision to the Swampscott early in the season, but turned the tables on the Big Blue in the rematch by a score of 2-0, a victory that began a five-game winning streak that catapulted the Vikings to the NEC South crown and a berth in the state tourney.
“The boys played their best game of the year against a superb Marblehead team,” said Ronan of his squad’s deadlock with the visiting Magicians, who entered the contest with a record of 11-4-1 and were ranked 17th in the MIAA Division 2 power ratings,
Sami Nessassi scored the Viking goal with a minute left in the first half that eventually proved to be the history-making tally.
Ronan and his crew now await the announcement of their final seeding and preliminary round opponent in the upcoming MIAA Division 3 state tournament.

Volleyball team concludes season
The Winthrop High volleyball team wrapped up its 2025 season with a make-up contest vs. Triton this past Saturday.
“We had a tough year, but that’s to be expected as we continue to build,” said WHS head coach Jeremy Wein. “The girls went as hard as they could and that’s all I can ask for. I’m proud of them and I enjoyed working with them. My hope is they continue doing a winter and/or spring sport to keep them active so they are ready for next fall.”
