Dale Dunbar, who piloted the Winthrop High School boys hockey team to the Division 4 state championship, has been named the 2025 Boston Globe Coach of the Year.
Dunbar, a 1979 Winthrop High graduate who played college hockey at BU and professional hockey in the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins organizations, told the Sun-Transcript, “It’s a huge honor. But it’s not me. It’s my entire staff, especially Mike Norris, who’s always there with me – for the last 18 years. He’s a tremendous asset to have. This is not an individual award. I would never accept it like that, because there’s too many good hockey minds that are with me. I have great support and great people around me.”
Winthrop girls hockey coach Butch Martucci extended his congratulations to Dunbar on receiving the sport’s highest coaching award. “I’m just super proud of Dale for getting that award and the boys for winning the state championship,” said Martucci. “Our program is so happy for those guys. I’m looking forward to being at the celebration of our state champions [Winthrop High’s 1976 and 2025 teams] Saturday night.”
