Annmarie (Howard) Silva
Retired educator whose warmth, dedication, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her
Annmarie (Howard) Silva, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and educator, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2024, with her son by her side, after a brief illness.
Born on July 3, 1941, Annmarie was the cherished daughter of the late Marie (Pimentel) and William Howard. She was married for 39 years to Johnny Silva, who predeceased her.
A proud undergraduate of Boston State College, she dedicated over 30 years to teaching math and computer science in Winthrop, where she was a respected and inspiring figure in the classroom. After retiring, she continued her role as educator at Endicott, Quincy and North Shore Community Colleges. Her commitment extended beyond the school walls; she was a founding member of the Winthrop Yacht Club youth sailing program, helping to nurture a love for sailing in countless young people over its 40-year history.
Annmarie’s greatest joy came from her role as Grammy to her two grandsons, Jack and James Silva, with whom she shared countless treasured moments. She is survived by her son, Jay Silva, and his wife, Cindy, both of Winthrop, as well as her adored grandsons. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, her sisters-in-law, cousins, and extended family.
A passionate traveler, Annmarie loved exploring new destinations. She loved to read, with mystery novels being her favorite. Her zest for life and love of travel were matched only by her enjoyment of hosting special family events and gatherings, where she warmly invited the entire family to create lasting memories.
In her retirement, she gave back to the community by teaching computer classes at the Winthrop Senior Center, volunteering at My Brother’s Table in Lynn and as treasurer of the Winthrop Catholic Women’s Club. Annmarie’s warmth, dedication, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched as a teacher, mentor, and grandmother.
The funeral will be conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Thursday, September 12 at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Services will conclude with the interment in the Cross Street section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Joseph Neville
Retired Wentworth Institute Professor
Joseph P. Neville of Winthrop passed away at the Katzman Center for Living in Chelsea on September 4, 2024. He was 90 years old.
Born in San Diego, California, he was the beloved son of the late Joseph P. Neville and Regina Albano (Boylan) and his stepfather, Cosmo Albano. A resident of Winthrop for over 69 years, he previously lived in Newport, Rhode Island and New Jersey.
Joe retired from Wentworth Institute of Technology in December 1994 from his position as Professor, Mechanical after 29 years of service. He began in 1965 as an Instructor, Materials Engineering Technology and was promoted to Professor in 1979. His WIT activities included attending Open Houses and graduation and serving as a member of the Rank and Promotion Committee, Faculty Governance Committee and Committee of Faculty Assembly. Prior to working at WIT, he was employed as a process and product engineer in the private industry.
His educational background includes B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from MIT and a Certificate in Metallurgy of Welding and Joining from the Metals Engineer Institute. Joe was a member of ASEE, ASM and MRS and was a registered Professional Engineer in Massachusetts. He also held a Massachusetts teaching certification at the high school level for Math and Chemistry. He has had articles published in Engineering Education, Journal of Engineering Technology and the T.H.E. Journal. He was also a book reviewer for Choice Magazine. He had released five editions of the Historic Hiking Trails in the Boston area and maintained nine historic trails in the Boston area. He was the founder of six trails used by Scout troops. He was also a Scout Leader for many years and volunteered at Lourdes and the Winthrop Public Library.
He was the loving cousin of Mary Jane, Shelia, Joseph, Tim and Michael and the dear friend of Arthur Housman and Filomena Castaldini.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the funeral mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop on Friday, September 13, at 10 a.m. Services will conclude with the interment in the St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown, Rhode Island.
