John Goodwin was officially sworn in as Winthrop’s new police chief at Tuesday night’s town council meeting. Goodwin takes over the reins of the department from Terence Delehanty, who led it for almost 15 years. Goodwin has over 30 years of police experience in both Revere and Winthrop.
“He’s been an incredible asset, and I’m looking forward to seeing how much he can do for the town and for public safety,” said Council President Jim Letterie.
Goodwin pledged to work diligently with his team to deploy the department’s enforcement resources and to keep drugs, guns, and violence out of the community. “It is with confidence that I would compare our department’s date-driven, intelligence-led philosophy with any other department in the commonwealth,” said Goodwin.
“I pledge to you that I will work diligently with our team to keep your children away from drugs, guns, and violence by continuing our community engagement and prevention programs in partnership with the school department, CASA, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s department … by building trust and confidence with our young people.” Goodwin said he would compare his department’s community engagement program’s results favorably with any other department in the nation.
The new chief also said his department will also work closely with other departments and organizations to provide services for those suffering from addiction and mental health issues, as well as victims of domestic violence.
“I want to thank Chief Delehanty for his commitment,” said Goodwin. “It is his innovation to develop and implement the above framework to continue to serve the community through the next generation. I am forever grateful for his friendship.” To the men and women of the Winthrop Police Department, Goodwin said he will advocate for their working conditions and to provide state-of-the-art training with the goal of keeping them safe.
“In closing, thank you to my family for supporting me not only in my police career, but all through my life,” said Goodwin. “To my wife, who is my biggest critic and my biggest fan, I couldn’t have done it without you.”
