WHS Boys Soccer Hosts South Hadley in Tourney Opener Tonight
The Winthrop High boys soccer team will host South Hadley in the first round of the upcoming MIAA Division 4 State Tournament this evening (Thursday) at 6:00 at Miller Field.
The Vikings enter the tourney as the 29th-ranked team in D-4 with a 7-10-1 record. Falmouth is the 36th-seed with an 8-8-2 mark.
The winner of the match will move on to the Round of 32 where they will face the fourth-ranked team, Hamilton-Wenham, which finished with a 13-1-2 record, on a date and time to be determined.
Coach Phil Ronan’s Viking crew held Senior Night festivities last Thursday in their regular season finale against Marblehead at Miller Field. Although Winthrop came up short by a 1-0 decision to the Magicians (who are ranked 26th in D-2), Ronan was pleased with his team’s performance.
“The boys played their best game of the year,” said Ronan. “Marblehead scored in the dying minutes of the first half on a wild scramble in front of our net. Juan Mendoza hit the crossbar seconds later, which came straight down, barely missing crossing the goal line. We had a handful of chances in the second half, outplaying them completely, but we were unable to convert.”
WHS Girls Soccer Holds Senior Night
The Winthrop High girls soccer team wrapped up its 2023 season this past week with a trio of matches against Northeastern Conference opponents. The Lady Vikings hosted Gloucester for Senior Night festivities and came up short by a score of 4-1, with Stella Osburn reaching the back of the Lady Fisherman net for the Winthrop tally. “We had a lot of opportunities, but just couldn’t put it all together,” said WHS head coach Tracey Martucci.
The Lady Vikings then traveled to Salem, where they battled the Witches to a 0-0 deadlock. “We definitely had a few chances to take the game, but just couldn’t find the back of the net,” noted Martucci.
Winthrop then trekked to Marblehead for the season finale and fell by a score of 6-0. “Our goalkeeper, Tori Bates, had an outstanding game despite the score,” said Martucci. “She made a few big breakaway saves.
“I have to shout out to all of my seniors, captain Hannah Parker, capt. Shannon Abbott, Samantha DiMento, Kaylee Farrell, Reese Brodin, Hailey Forsyth, Carolina Gonzalez, Malak Chahlaouy, and Daniela Gomez,” said Martucci. “They were such positive leaders and kept the morale of the team up. Even though we didn’t have a winning season on paper, when the team just clicks and has great chemistry and bonds are made, it’s a winning season in my book.”
WHS Cross Country Competes in NEC Meet
Members of the Winthrop High boys and girls cross country teams competed in the Northeastern Conference Meet that was held this past Sunday at Fort Stage Park in Gloucester.
“The team did great,” said WHS head coach Nik Beshere.
