Rita Quirk

Active at the Winthrop Senior Center, Member of the Seaside Tappers

Rita C. (Harrington) Quirk passed away peacefully at home on October 18 surrounded by the love and comfort of her daughters.

Born and raised in Somerville, she was the devoted daughter of the late Rita (McGowan) and Arthur J. Harington. Rita spent her childhood surrounded by extended family. She moved to Winthrop after graduating from Somerville High School. She went on to work as a telephone operator and eventually retired from BNY Mellon where she worked as a receptionist.

Rita leaves behind a family she loved unconditionally, including her daughters and their husbands, Dawn and Jim Letterie and Tracy and Chris Carlsen, as well as her two beloved grandchildren, Jake and Jenna Letterie. She is also survived by her sister, Carol Adamson, and her nieces Robin Murphy, Kelly Adamson and Jill Buccini, along with their children, Taylor, Mark, Shannon, Ryan and Heather. She was predeceased by her siblings: Ann Crossman and Mary and Arthur (Buddy) Harrington.

Rita enjoyed the time she spent with her three sisters. They spent nearly every day together. The four of them were often seen doing errands or taking rides around Winthrop.

Rita cherished the time she spent vacationing at the beach with her family.?

She especially loved the Cape Cod National Seashore. She would swim for hours and walk for miles along the shore. Rita loved to dance and enjoyed spending time at the Winthrop Senior Center, tap dancing, line dancing and doing Zumba. She was a proud member of the Seaside Tappers. She had a wonderful group of friends at the Senior Center and enjoyed going on day trips and out to lunch with them.

Mary Rita Cleary Barker

Mom, Ma, Nana and Great Nana, She Will Be Sorely Missed by Her Loving Family

Mary Rita Cleary Barker, 93, of Winthrop passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Monday, October 23.

Mary was born in Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada on August 21, 1930, the daughter of the late Edward and Margaret (Lynch) Cleary. She came to this country when she was 12 years old and grew up in East Boston. Mary attended St. Lazarus Elementary School and Fitton High School. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Theresa  Ryan, Johannah Maloney, Margaret Glennon and Lawrence Cleary. Also, her beloved son, Stephen Joseph Barker, died in 1999.

She was the loving and devoted mother of George Barker of North Reading, Michael Barker and his wife, Christine of Danvers, the late Stephen Barker and his wife, Marie of Everett, Deborah Pazdziorny and her husband, Chester of Middleton, Robert Barker and Valerie Travers of Everett, Edward Barker and his partner, Kathy McGee of Harwich, MA and Denise Minichiello and her husband, John of Tewksbury and the former mother in law of Ann Barker; cherished grandmother of George Barker, Shannon Barker-Fivelson (Spencer), Sean Barker, Michael Barker, Elaina Barker, Stephen Barker, Brian Pazdziorny (Sarah), Kevin Pazdziorny (Inga), Lauren Pazdziorny Banwell (Cameron), Tia Barker, Julia Barker, Christian Barker, Grace Barker, David Minichiello and Sarah Minichiello and great grandmother of Ronan Barker-Purcell, Reese Barker-Fivelson, Paige Barker-Fivelson, Charlie, Georgia, Eleanor and Sam Pazdziorny, Harper Pazdziorny and Layla Mary Banwell. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Mom, Ma, Nana and Great Nana will be sorely missed by her loving family.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Thursday, October 26, 2023 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Friday, October 27, 2023 at 9:00 AM followed by a funeral mass in St. John the Evangelist Church 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10:00 AM. Services will conclude with the interment in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Paul Femino

Retired Welder

Born in 1944, Paul E. Femino was the son of Pasquale Femino and Santa (Sally) Femino (Forte) and brother of Patricia Volente and the late Joanne Femino.

He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Bernadette (Luongo) Femino and he was the father of the late Paul Femino, Jr. and also the father of his daughter, Andrea Lockett and son-in-law Geoff Lockett of Georgetown and their children, Isabella and Maxwell Lockett; brother-in-law of Rita Bartholomew, Al and Ann Luongo and Joseph Volente and a cherished uncle to his nieces and nephews.

Paul grew up in East Boston and Malden. He served in the US Navy overseas in Japan during the Vietnam War and learned what would end up as his career trade, welding. When he returned from the Navy, he married and moved to Winthrop where he lived for 46 years.

Upon retirement, he and Bernadette moved to Groveland where he enjoyed the peace and quiet.

In his early years, Paul enjoyed listening to music, dancing and spending time with friends and family. He had a great sense of humor, a natural passion for cooking and loved playing poker with his life-long friends, Anne and Scotty Scutellaro, also of Winthrop, for over 50 years.

Over the years, Paul and Bernadette enjoyed traveling both within the United States and Europe, and devoting time to their children and grandchildren, creating memories and cherished moments. 

The funeral was conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Friday, October 13 followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church. Rev. Patrick O’Connor celebrated the mass and offered prayers at the interment in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Albert F. Smith III

Former Winthrop Resident

Albert F. (Buddy) Smith III of New Bedford, formerly of Winthrop, passed away suddenly on October 16. He was 65 years old.

Born in South Boston, the cherished son of the late Albert F. Jr. and Marie Ann (Jordan) Smith, Buddy was the dear brother of Donna Marie Smith of Salem, Marybeth Gioia and her former husband, Peter of Boynton Beach, FL and Bradley Stephen Smith and his wife, Mary Ellen of Waltham. He is also survived by five nieces, one nephew, two great nieces, one great nephew and many cousins.

Buddy was an avid Boston sports fan. He enjoyed watching Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins games on TV.?

He also loved learning about American and World history from the History Channel and from YouTube videos.?

He proudly shared photos of his family on Facebook, especially his nieces, nephew and great nieces and nephew. Throughout his challenging life he managed to stay humble, always helping those in need.?

Among his many accomplishments, he will be remembered fondly for taking care of his friend, Eddie and being a surrogate dad to Jesse.

Margaret “Peggy” Flynn

Dedicated Nurse and Beacon of Compassion at Boston City Hospital and at Boston Public Health Methadone Clinic

Margaret A. “Peggy” Flynn of Winthrop, formerly of East Boston, passed away on October 16. She was 78 years old.

The cherished daughter of the late Thomas F. and Mary (Greer) Flynn,

Peggy was a beacon of compassion as evidenced by her dedication as a nurse both at Boston City Hospital and at the Boston Public Health Methadone Clinic. She was an avid traveler and lover of all things historical, especially Winthrop and The Harbor Islands. But her greatest joy was doting on her great nieces and nephews, teaching them about their ancestry or just taking them for a walk on the beach.

A special big thank you to the staff at Mass. General, who cared for Peggy with compassion and love.

Peggy was the dear sister of Thomas Flynn of Florida, Maura Bagley and her husband, Henry of Melrose and Christine Flynn of East Boston; the loving aunt of Tracy Gardner and her husband, Glen of Hanover, Thomas Flynn Jr. of Florida, Ian Flynn of Somerville, Elizabeth Bagley of East Boston, Matthew Bagley and his wife, Margaret of Rye, NY, Andrew Bagley and his wife, Lorraine of Howell, NJ and 13 great nieces and nephews. She also leaves her best friend Maureen Barry of Winthrop.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church (St. Michael’s Parish)-Winthrop on Saturday, October 21, at 10 a.m. Interment was private. Donations can be made to the Massachusetts General Hospital Development Fund, 125 Nashua St. Suite 540, Boston, MA. 02114.
