Attorney Marc Chapdelaine, candidate for the Precinct 2 seat on the Winthrop Town Council, hosted a campaign reception Oct. 4 at Hong Kong Dragon restaurant on Woodside Avenue.
Town Council President Jim Letterie, a former Precinct 2 councilor, delivered the introductory remarks to the large gathering.
“To see anybody put their name on the ballot is a big deal,” said Letterie. “It takes a lot of time. It takes time away from family, friends, work. And to basically be a businessman in the town, it makes it an even bigger deal. So, I want to thank Marc for putting his name in the hat, so to speak, because it’s needed.
“We’ve had a Council form of government for the past 18 years, and all but two of those years, we’ve had an attorney as a member of the Council, so, I think that’s something that is very important, and we can’t underestimate that,” continued Letterie. “Marc just brings a wealth of knowledge to the Council. He’s a voice of reason. He’s very steadfast. Being a voice of reason in this day and age is incredibly important.”
Chapdelaine said he and his wife moved to Winthrop 11 years ago. “We fell in love with the community and realized how amazing it was. We have amazing restaurants. We have amazing beaches. We have an amazing golf course. You can have a boat in this community. You can have anything you want in this community. It’s yours for the taking, if it’s something that makes you happy.
“When we decided to settle down, soon we had kids and our family grew,” said Chapdelaine.
Chapdelaine said he’s often asked why he would run for office at this point in his life. “It’s because there’s something greater here going on. Over the next four years, we’re going to make decisions as a town that’s going to impact our next 40 years. The decisions that we make a Town Council will affect every single resident’s life.”
Chapdelaine expressed his support for the development of a new recreational facility at the site of the old Middle School. He also said he would work hard to maximize funding for Winthrop schools to enhance each student’s education. He also said he is in favor of building a new fire/public safety station in the town.
Chapdelaine said he has knocked on many doors in Precinct 2 to talk individually with residents about town issues and will continue to so in the days leading up to Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
