Phyllis Glazier

Of Saugus

Phyllis I. (Donovan) Glazier of Saugus passed away on September 16. She was 92 years old.

Born in Boston, the cherished daughter of the late William Donovan and Frances Theresa (Hoey) Vincent, Phyllis was the devoted mother of Robert T. Glazier and his wife, Pastora of Huevar del Algarafe, Spain, Dianne T. Burns of Ayer and the late William M. Glazier and James E. Glazier; the adored grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of two. She was the dear sister of the late William J. Donovan, Hellen Murray, Inez Green, Elizabeth Roberson, Nancy Curran and Pauline Vincent. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was the former wife of the late David Glazier.

Phyllis’s funeral will be held from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop, today, Thursday, September 21 at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church (St. Michaels Parish)-Winthrop at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will follow in Winthrop Cemetery-(Belle Isle Section).

John Joseph Silva, Jr.

Taught at Winthrop Middle School for 40 Years

John Joseph Silva, Jr. of Revere passed away surrounded by his family on September 13 at the age of 77.

John was a retired Lt. Colonel of the United States Army Reserves of Massachusetts.  He was a teacher for 40 years at the Winthrop Middle School and a Professor at Cambridge College for 30 years, a life member of the Association of the First Corps of Cadets and a member of the Sons of Italy Renaissance Lodge.

Born in Boston on March 25, 1946 to the late John J. Silva Sr.  and Julia (Vacca), he was the beloved husband of the late Arlene (Kelly) and the loving partner of 17 years to Stephanie DeRosa of Revere; devoted father of Michelle Silva-Reed and John J. Silva III and his life partner, Holly Luck, all of Revere; cherished grandfather of Natalie and Nathan Reed and dear brother of Robert Silva and his life partner, Jeanise Bertrand of Revere.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church, 133 Beach St, Revere today, Thursday, September 21 at 10:30 a.m. (Everyone to meet directly at church).  Relatives and friends are kindly invited.  A Visitation was held on Wednesday at the funeral home.  Interment with military honors will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s name can be made to Immaculate Conception Church, 133 Beach St, Revere, MA 02151 or to First Corps of Cadets Fund c/o the Treasurer, 227 Commonwealth Ave, Boston, MA 02116.  For guest book please visit www.buonfiglio.com.

Helen Barbaro

Retired Winthrop School Cafeteria Aide

Helen Barbaro of Winthrop and formerly of East Boston passed away at the Advocate Healthcare of East Boston on September 7. She was 90 years old.

Born in East Boston, she was the beloved daughter of the late Helen (Baldwin) and Albert Barbaro. A resident of Winthrop for over 30 years, she worked as an aide in school cafeterias.

She was the loving mother of Rhonda Mariano, Michael Anacki, Mark Anacki and the late Walter Anacki, Jr.; dear sister of Marie Rodriquez, Anne Brown and Ruth Sullivan and cherished grandmother of Gina and David Mariano.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the funeral home today, Thursday, September 21 from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Services will conclude with the interment in the Belle isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Bernard F. Kelly

Regular Contributor and Longtime Book Review Critic for the Winthrop Sun Transcript

On September 17, Bernard F. Kelly was called home by his Heavenly Father. Bernard is survived by his wife, Maureen Kelly of Winthrop. He was loved by his brothers, Daniel and Robert, his sisters, Linda and Kathleen and his nieces, nephews, in laws and extended family. Bernard leaves behind many close friends in the Winthrop community and far beyond.

A devout Catholic, Bernard was member of Michael’s The Archangel Parish in Winthrop; he also served as an altar boy at St. Patrick’s Church in Roxbury. Bernard was a 1968 graduate of Boston College High School and distinguished Latin Scholar. He was fluent in several languages including Russian, Spanish, Latin and Greek. He was awarded a full scholarship to Holy Cross College in Worcester Massachusetts where he graduated with High Honors.

Beloved by his longtime customers at The White Hen Pantry, he would often engage customers in conversations ranging from literature to world events.

Bernard was passionate about politics and social change and worked on several major political campaigns, including that of the late Robert F. Kennedy. Bernard was a voracious reader and prolific writer. He was a regular contributor to the Winthrop Sun Transcript where he was a longtime book review critic.

Most importantly, Bernie was a loving husband, brother, uncle and caring friend who will be missed beyond measure. His kind and gentle nature and generosity of spirit was unparalleled. He was a compassionate man and he endeared himself to all he met. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. The family asks only that you remember Bernie warmly and keep him in your hearts.

Felix F. Albano, Jr.

Member of Knights of Columbus and the Cottage Park Yacht Club

Felix F. Albano, Jr. of Winthrop passed away at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston on September 15. He was 77 years old.

Born in Boston, he was the beloved son of the late Mary E. (Musco) and Felix F. Albano, Sr. A life-long resident of Winthrop, he enlisted in the Navy and served during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, he went on to work as an administrator in Nursing Homes. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Cottage Park Yacht Club.

He was the devoted husband of the late Maureen (Weker) and Letteria M. (Barresi; loving father of Felix F. Albano, III and his wife, Shari of Bedford, NH and Melissa Dolen and her husband, Sean of Winthrop; dear brother of Bette Conley and her husband, Ted of Winthrop and Fr. Vincent Albano of Corpus Christi, Texas and cherished grandfather of Jordyn, Jake and Sean, Jr.

 The funeral was conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier funeral home on Wednesday, September 20 followed by a funeral mass in St. John the Evangelist Church. Rev. Peter Graziano celebrated the service and offered prayers at the interment in interment in the Cross Street section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Anthony Capobianco

Retired Director of International Taxes at the Bank of Boston

Anthony R. Capobianco of Winthrop died at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on September 15. He was 85 years old.

He was born at the Strong Hospital on Eagle Hill in East Boston to Ralph and Raffiela Capobianco of East Boston. Tony and his former spouse, Judith Lubell, had two children they adored, Anthony R. Capobianco (deceased) and Andrew R. Capobianco of Winthrop. He is survived by his sisters Angeline Cortez and Margaret Capobianco, both of Newton, brothers, Jimmy of Las Vegas and Gino of Winthrop. He was the nephew of Robert Giarla of East Boston, cousin to Anthony Giarla of Revere, Ronnie Damico of Winthrop and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.

Tony grew up in the Maverick Projects in East Boston and worked at his uncle Tony Giarla’s store on Chelsea St. He moved to Winthrop in 1971, called it home and remained there until his death.

A summa cum laude graduate of Boston University, he worked at Arthur Anderson, Boston, as an accountant before joining the First National Bank of Boston, where he eventually became the Director of International Taxes (Bank of Boston) as a Certified Public Accountant.

In this position, he acquired a taste for business travel to the UK, France, West Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Luxembourg, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia. His favorite places were Rio de Janeiro, Zürich and all of Italy.

Tony was a huge fan of Music, becoming a massive Bob Dylan fan as early as the Greenwich Village folk music scene and seeing the Rolling Thunder Revue multiple times in the 1970s. He was famous for being the first in Winthrop to own a VCR, often recording early Saturday Night Live episodes and the birth of MTV.

He was also a big fan of Boston Sports, famously attending Ted Williams’s last Red Sox game (he had a ticket stub) in 1960, watching Bobby Orr in the 70’s, Larry Bird in the 80’s, Tom Brady in the early 2000’s, and eventually seeing the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004.

His later years were made possible by the Winthrop PACE Center on Sturgis Street, Winthrop, where he received care for over ten years.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the graveside service in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery on Friday, September 22 at 10 a.m. Following, there will be a reception at the Beachmont Yacht Club, 168 Pearl Ave, Revere.

Barbara Serina

Retired Legal Secretary

Barbara V. Serina of Winthrop passed away on September 12. She was 81 years old.

The loving longtime companion of Edward J. Zeigler of Winthrop, she was born in Boston, the cherished daughter of the late Joseph and Bette (Blumenstein) Serina.

Prior to her retirement, Barbara worked as a legal secretary.

Barbara was the dear sister of Annette Woodman of Lynn, the adored aunt of Cheryl Dutra of Maine and the great aunt of Kristen and John Dutra.

Visiting hours were held in the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop on Friday, September 15 followed by a Graveside Service in the Winthrop Cemetery (Belle Isle Section) 100 Kennedy Dr., Winthrop.
