Patricia Squeglia

Retired Teacher

Patricia A. Squeglia of Mashpee passed away at the Bear Mountain at Reading on September 11, 2023. She was 87 years old. Born in Dorchester, she was the beloved daughter of the late Elinor and Francis Cosgrove. Prior to her retirement she was an elementary school teacher for many years. She was also a member of the Bayberry Quilting Club and the Mashpee Gardening Club.

She was the devoted wife of the late Peter R. Squeglia, Sr. and the loving mother of Peter R. Squeglia, Jr. and his wife, Erin of Reading, Paul Squeglia and his wife, Jennifer of Naples, Florida and William Squeglia and his wife, Rosemarie of Reading; dear sister of Donna Morrissey of Newton and Shelia Cosgrove of Rosas, Spain and the cherished grandmother of Peter III, Brynn, Mae, Liam and Charles.

The funeral will be conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Thursday, September 14 at 9 a.m.followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Services will conclude with the interment in the Cross Street section of Winthrop Cemetery.

George Nicosia

American Airlines Retiree

George A. Nicosia of Winthrop passed away peacefully at Pilgrim Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Peabody on September 10. He was 81 years old.

George graduated from Somerville High School in 1959 and later went on to receive his Associates Degree in Applied Science in Management at Newbury Junior College in 1976. He enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War reaching the rank of Private E-2. After his honorable discharge, George went on to work for 35 years as a ticket agent and later managing agents in passenger services at American Airlines.

Born in Somerville, George was the beloved son of the late Virginia A. (Magliulo) Nicosia and Fred F. Nicosia.

A resident of Winthrop for over 50 years, he was the devoted husband of the late Kathleen A. (Hawk) Nicosia and the loving father of Marianne DeLuca and her husband, Frank of Stoneham; dear brother of Carol Nicosia of Waltham and the late Dolores Hajjar, Frederick A. Nicosia, Florence Cirignano and Virginia Sarmatzis; brother-in-law of Stan Sarmatzis of Woburn, Jim Hawk of Chevy Chase, MD, Larry and Patti Hawk of Gilbert, AZ, Kim and Jeff Meyer of Painesville, OH and the late Leo Hajjar and John Cirignano; cherished grandfather of Bruno and Gino DeLuca. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation at the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Tuesday, September 19 from 9 to 11 a.m.  followed by a Funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 11:30 a.m. Services will conclude with the interment in Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.

Richard Neil Pascar

He Is in the Hearts and Minds of His Extended Family and Friends

Richard Neil Pascar, 63, of Hollis, NH, formerly of Winthrop, entered into eternal rest on Friday, September 1.

Richard was born in Boston, the son of the late Murray Pascar and is survived by his mother, Gloria Pascar of Deerfield Beach, FL.

He grew up in Winthrop and was a graduate of Winthrop High School.  He was a veteran of the Armed Forces.  He enlisted at age 17 and served for nine years in both the National Guard and U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer and Medevac.

For several years, Richard was an active member of the Merrimack Valley Antique Bottle Club.  He was passionate about antiques and enjoyed learning about their history through his research.  He loved fishing and always carried a rod ready to cast.  He would venture out hiking or take long drives exploring the beauty of New England.  Richard was a self-taught musician and would pick up the guitar to jam with friends at many gatherings.

In addition to his mother, Richard is survived by his sisters, Jodi and her husband, Ira Adler of Nashua, NH and  Amy Pascar of Winthrop.  He was an uncle to Jessica, Victoria and Charles, as well as a great-uncle to Hunter and Devin.  He is in the hearts and minds of all his extended family and friends.

A Funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 5 at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington St. Canton, MA 02021.  Burial followed at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham St.  Sharon, MA 02067.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Richard’s honor to Veterans Programs, such as the Wounded Warrior Project or K9s for Warriors.

Kathryn Wallace

Lifelong Educator

Kathryn (Mulkern) Wallace of Winthrop passed away peacefully at home after a long illness on September 9 at the age of 69. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Kathy is survived by her devoted husband and best friend, Stephen, with whom she shared 46 years of marriage and 51 years of adventures. She was the most beloved and proudest mother of Elizabeth and her husband, Allan Smith, Annie and her husband, Will Dunne, Joseph Wallace and Julia and her husband, Pat Fullerton. Nana was an adoring grandmother to Wally Dunne, Mae Smith and Tommy Dunne. Kathy is survived by her dear younger siblings, Mary Ellis and her husband, Al, Maureen Mulkern Lojko, Trisha Tabbut and her husband, Jim and Jimmy Mulkern and his wife, Juko. Kathy leaves behind a loving pack of friends, including Kim Geraci and The Girls, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Kathy was greeted in heaven with a hot pot of coffee by her parents, Ed and Julia (Voke) Mulkern, her in-laws, Arthur and Ginny (Morris) Wallace, her brothers, Eddie, David, and John Mulkern and by many other beloved family members and friends.

A 1975 graduate of Salem State College, Mrs. Wallace went on to become a lifelong educator, molding the minds and shaping the behavior of hundreds of elementary school children at several schools, including Our Lady of Grace (Everett) in the 1970’s, the Dalrymple Elementary School (Winthrop) in the 1990’s, and her alma mater, St. Rose School (Chelsea), where she spent the last two decades of her career before retiring in 2020. Kathy spread her dry wit and quiet humor on adventures spanning from the top of the European Alps to the white sand beaches of Grand Cayman with Stephen and the rest of her family. You could typically find Kathy on her front porch with a cup of coffee, Sudoku, iPad and/or a good book watching the world go by. A lover of all things peach and plaid, she looked forward to traveling the world with Stephen, steak dinners with The Girls, turtleneck weather, Pizza Fridays, game nights with her siblings and spending time with her greatest joys: Walla Walla, Mae Mae and Tom Tom. Kathy will be deeply missed, but her memory and generous spirit will live strong with all who loved her.

Kathy and her family are eternally grateful for the exemplary love and care of Dr. Denis Balaban and the rest of the neurology team at Massachusetts General Hospital; Paula Brousseau and Annette Costa of Boston Home Infusions; Sarah Koontz of Mass General Brigham Home-Based Palliative Care Team; and Molly Kelley and the rest of the Care Dimensions team.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Thursday, September 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Friday, September 15 at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 3420 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Services will conclude with the interment in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.

MaryJane Evans

Retired Claims Adjuster

Mary Jane Evans of Middleborough and formerly of Winthrop passed away at the Nemasket Healthcare Center in Middleborough on September 4.

A resident of Winthrop for many years, she was the beloved daughter of the late Nora (Tierney) and Robert Rawston. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a claims adjuster in the insurance industry.

She was the devoted wife of the late Roy E. Evans and the loving mother of Noreen Flaherty and her husband, John and Diane Mastrangelo and her husband, Michael, all of Lakeville and Paul Evans and his wife, Lynne of Ossipee, New Hampshire; cherished grandmother of Christopher, Christina and Melissa Mastrangelo of Lakeville, Brett Flaherty and his wife Jessica of Easton, Erin Skelly and her husband, John of West Greenwich, RI and Paul, Noelle and Holly Evans of Ossipee, New Hampshire. She is also survived by six great grandchildren.

A funeral service was held in the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Tuesday, September 12. Rev. Christopher O’Connor celebrated the service and offered prayers at the interment in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Steven Pradell

Well Respected Alaska Attorney, Graduate of Winthrop High School, Class of 1978

Steven (Steve) Pradell died unexpectedly at his home in Anchorage, Alaska on June 12 at the age of 62.

Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, his early years were spent in Massachusetts, first in Newton and then in Winthrop, where his musical skills were honed, starting on the cello. He then developed a love for showmanship, becoming a magician and joining school plays and musicals. He graduated from Winthrop High School, Class of 1978.

Steve attended Brandeis College in Waltham and law school at the University of Oregon. During his law school summers, he  traveled to Homer, Alaska to work as a deckhand on fishing boats, where his passion for Alaska grew.

Steve was a well respected attorney and had his own law practice: Pradell and Associates in Anchorage, specializing in Family Law.

Steve practiced law, performed musically and was a magician.

He and Nancy also became very active as a host family for visiting international high school students and served as mentors for other families who became hosts as well. For him most importantly, he was a loving stepdad to the five children he raised with Nancy and the beloved “Bappa” to their 12 grandchildren.

He was the beloved son of Lila Pradell and the late David Pradell and stepson of Judy Pradell, the cherished husband of Nancy Edtl and proud father to his five stepchildren: Theresa, Jeffrey, Laura, Randy and Alex and grandfather to their 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by five siblings: Larry Pradell, Brenna Pradell-Boyd, Marjanna Perrotta, Lisa Farrell and Amy Pradell.

Celebrations of his life were held both in Anchorage, Alaska on June 20 and at his home in Winthrop on July 14.
