Winthrop Basketball Team Rallies, But Falls Short to Fenwick, 60–57

The Winthrop High boys basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit, but its furious fourth-quarter comeback fell short to Bishop Fenwick, 50-47, Tuesday on the Crusaders’ homecourt in Peabody.

Jeramy Matias scored six of his team-high 14 points in the final quarter to lead the comeback and create a last-second opportunity for the Vikings to send the game into overtime. After securing a defensive rebound, Matias raced upcourt before his three-pointer missed connection at the buzzer.

“In the fourth quarter, we started to play with the pride and intensity that Vikings play with, but unfortunately on this night, it was too little, too late,” said Winthrop head coach Mike Triant.

The Vikings struggled offensively in the second quarter as Fenwick outscored Winthrop, 21-9 in the frame and built a 36-23 advantage. “We have to start quicker,” said Triant. “They played a tough, aggressive man-to-man defense, and we had a tough time getting the shots we wanted. Our free throw shooting (8-of-16) was also a factor in the loss.”

Matias was a standout in the Vikings’ frontcourt. “Jeremy played really well,” said Triant. “He’s really making his presence felt at both ends of the court.”

Team captain Zack Bogusz connected on a three-pointer during the fourth-quarter rally and finished with nine points. George Galuris helped pilot the Vikings’ comeback, finishing with 11 points overall. Andrew Faretra (6 points), Ryan Harris (5), and Raesean Bebri (2) also contributed for the Vikings.

Winthrop lost to Saugus, 65-57, Friday despite an impressive 22-point-4 assist performance by Galuris, the Vikings’ talented, sophomore guard. Bogusz had 14 points and 6 assists. Faretra scored eight points while Harris netted six points.

Winthrop (2-2) plays Northeast Regional Thursday in the home opener Thursday at 7 p.m. The freshman team will play at 4 p.m., while the junior varsity team will play at 5:30 p.m.

David Green Memorial Christmas Tournament set for Dec. 28-29

The Vikings will host the David Green Memorial Christmas Tournament Dec. 28-29 in Winthrop. The tournament honors the life of David Green, a retired Massachusetts state trooper and Winthrop resident who died during a shooting incident in the town on June 26, 2021. Brown’s actions were heroic on that tragic day.

United States Air Force veteran Ramona Cooper was also fatally shot during the incident.

Winthrop will play Saugus on Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. Revere and East Boston will play in the tournament opener at noon. The semifinal winners will play in the championship game on Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. The consolation game is at noon.
