The Winthrop High School football program, under the direction of head coach Jonathan Cadigan, will hold its annual Ironman strength and agility competition Friday and its first pre-season practice Saturday.
After an MIAA-mandated day off Sunday, the Vikings will begin daily workouts Monday at 8 a.m. at Miller Field.
Following a walk-through next Thursday morning (Aug 25) the Vikings will compete in their annual Blue and Gold Intra-Squad Scrimmage Thursday night at Miller Field.
Winthrop will travel to Beverly on Saturday, Aug. 27 for a 10 a.m. tri-scrimmage with host Beverly High and Malden High.
On Wednesday, Aug. 31, Winthrop will scrimmage against East Boston High School at 3:30 p.m. at Miller Field. The final pre-season tune-up will be against Manchester-Essex on Sept. 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Miller Field.
The Vikings will elect their captains next week, with Cadigan set to make the announcement the night of the Blue and Gold Scrimmage.
Winthrop has two difficult intra-divisional tests to start the regular season with non-league games at Stoneham (Sept. 9) and versus St. Mary’s of Lynn (Sept. 16) at Miller Field. The visiting Spartans, who will likely be the top-ranked team in pre-season polls, are coached by Winthrop Parks and Recreation Director Sean Driscoll.
“All four of our non-league games (also versus Medway and Danvers) are against [2021] playoff teams, so we’ll know after Week 4 what kind of team we have,†said Cadigan candidly.
