David Aznavoorian

Retired Civil Engineer, talented artist, avid thoroughbred racing and country music fan, role model and devoted family man

David E. Aznavoorian of Winthrop passed away on June 30. He was 90 years old.

David was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946. He served with distinction as a combat marine during the Battle of Okinawa aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La and was a member of the US Marine Occupation Force on the Japanese mainland at the naval base at Yokosuka.

He was a graduate of Boston College where he starred as a member of the football team. After graduation from Boston College, David attended Northeastern Law School prior to starting his career as a Civil Engineer with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, where he worked for 63 years.  David was a talented artist and an avid fan of thoroughbred horseracing. During his basic training as a marine recruit at Parris Island, South Carolina, David acquired an appreciation for country music, which he enjoyed for the rest of his life. He also enjoyed traveling to the casinos with his wife, Barbara.

However, the most important thing in his life was his family. He adored his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and he was a role model for every member of his family. David was devoted to his brother, Charles. He will be greatly missed by every member of his extended family and his many friends and colleagues.

David was a member of the Boston College Alumni Association, the United States Seagoing Marine Association and a 30 year member of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association.

He was the beloved husband of the late Barbara M. (Swanson) Aznavoorian. Born in Medford, the son of the late Charles and Mary (Ansbigian) Aznavoorian, he was the devoted father of Michael W. Swanson and his wife, Andrea of Rowley, Thomas A. Swanson and his wife, Joan of Saugus, David C. Aznavoorian and his wife, Irene of Tewksbury, and Dr. Sadie A. Cheshire and her husband, Dr. L. Bryan Cheshire of Shrewsbury; adored grandfather of Michael and Meredith Swanson of Saugus, Ashley and Courtney Aznavoorian of Woburn and Haley and David Aznavoorian of Tewksbury; dear brother of Charles D. Aznavoorian of Medford. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

George Roberts

Member of Winthrop Elks

George D. Roberts of Winthrop passed away on June 29. He was 76 years old.

Prior to his retirement, George was employed with the MWRA & Touraine Paint in Everett. He was an avid New England Patriots fan and loved the ocean and fishing. He was a member of the Winthrop Lodge of Elks #1078.

The former husband of Margaret A. (Gorman) Roberts, he was born in Winthrop, the son of the late John S. and Dorothy M. (O’Leary) Roberts. George was the devoted father of Matthew G. Roberts of Revere and Jessica A. Edwards and her husband, Jason of Winthrop; dear brother of Nancy Halbich and her husband, Freddy of Burlington, Barbara Brownell and her husband, George of Arizona, William Roberts and his wife, Jeannette of Salem, NH, Dorothy Roberts of Doris, CA, Paul Roberts and his wife, Joyce of Denver, CO and the late Joan Roberts-Maloney and John P. “Jackie” Roberts. He was the proud “Pop pop” and cherished grandfather of James and Madelyn Roberts and Daniel and Sadie Edwards. Funeral arrangements were by the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, Winthrop. Annette Nahigyan

Retired court reporter and member of the Winthrop Historical and Improvement Association

Annette D. (Dabakian) Nahigyan of Winthrop, formerly of Brockton, passed away on June 15. She was 87 years old.

Annette was a member of the Winthrop Historical and Improvement Assn. Prior to her retirement; she worked as a  court reporter for the Massachusetts Supreme Court.

The devoted mother of the late Peter D. Nahigyan, she was born in the Bronx, NY, the daughter of the late Ely and Haiga (Helalzadeian) Dabakian. She was the mother-in-law of Debbi Nahigyan of Long Beach, CA and adored grandmother of Pierce Nahigyan of Long Beach, CA, Derek Nahigyan of Portland, OR, and Holly Nahigyan of Seattle, WA; loving sister of Arax Hicks of New York NY; dear friend of Eva Taper of Methuen and Ethel Kelley of Winthrop and the daughter of the late Ely and Haiga (Helalzadeian) Dabakian.
