In the history of Winthrop there have been many deserved tributes to residents. But the dedication ceremony for the renaming of the Winthrop Senior Center, which now will be known as the Robert A. DeLeo Senior Center, has to rank among the most preeminent events in this town in many years.
Speaker DeLeo clearly was touched by the emotion of such a signature occasion and the tremendous honor that was bestowed upon him by his fellow townspeople. To have a building in your hometown bear your name (and in this case, a facility for which Speaker DeLeo was so instrumental in its creation) is a recognition that the Speaker can enjoy for many years to come. Bob’s children, Robbie and Rachele, sat in the front row and looked proud of their father, as they saw first hand all that their father has meant to every aspect of this town’s daily life.
It was heartwarming to hear such glowing praise and personal tributes paid to the Speaker from his colleagues in the House, Speaker Pro Tempore Patricia Haddad and Majority Leader Ronald Mariano; our esteemed Governor, Deval Patrick; our superb Congressman of many years, Rep. Edward J. Markey; former state Senate President and Winthrop resident Robert Travaglini; and Town Council President Peter Gill, who has known the Speaker for many years.
Nancy Williams, Director of the Winthrop Council on Aging, did a great job as the master of ceremonies for the program. It was clear how much this day meant to Nancy and how much she values the friendship and public service of Speaker DeLeo and appreciates the tremendous advocacy he has shown on behalf of senior citizens not only in Winthrop, but across the Commonwealth.
Congratulations on this much-deserved honor, Mr. Speaker, and keep up the outstanding work for our seniors.
