Winthrop Powder Puff Defeats Revere, 24–0: Stiglets, Tallent, Holmes Score Touchdowns; Munson, Golden Key Shutout on Defense

The Winthrop High Powderfuff football team put together an awesome performance to defeat Revere, 24-0, in the annual game Saturday at Harry Della Russo Stadium in Revere.

Led by quarterback Lily Tallent, the Winthrop offense clicked masterfully in completing three scoring drives. Running back Maggie Stiglets, a dynamic point guard on the basketball team,  had a sparkling across-the-field run for a touchdown and then followed with the two-point conversion to set the tone on Winthrop’s first possession. Stiglets also had a 30-yard run to set up the touchdown, with her progress being stopped by a defender’s tripping violation.

Abby Holmes scored the game’s final touchdown on a 12-yard run in the third quarter. Mia Norris added the two-point conversion. Abby’s sister, Julia Holmes, had rushed for a two-point conversion following Lily Tallent’s 55-yard run for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Lily Tallent submitted a stellar effort comparable to Winthrop’s all-time great Powder Puff quarterback Lisa Montelone Ferrara.

“Lily gave us an unbelievable performance at quarterback,” said assistant coach Butch Martucci. “She demonstrated excellent leadership and had command of the huddle.”

Martucci is very familiar with the Tallent Tradition in Winthrop sports, having played on the same Winthrop High football team with Lily’s father, three-sport standout David Tallent Jr.

“I played football with David and Lily looked just like him calling the plays in the huddle,” said Martucci. “It flashed me back to 1990. David was a great player and Lily was a leader of this team just like her father was in his career.”

 Meanwhile, the Winthrop defense, led by super safety Gabby Golden and defensive liner Sophia Munson, helped stop Revere’s offense from reaching the end zone.

“Gabby was tremendous, and in the middle of the line, Sophia was breaking up plays like crazy, creating all sorts of confusion,” lauded Martucci.

Winthrop’s Haven Pereira and Cori Powell were very effective on containing Revere’s outside sweeps.

Butch Martucci was joined on the Winthrop sidelines by his nephew, assistant coach Kenny Hodgkins. Head coach John Cross was Bill Belichickian-like in his leadership of the Vikings, who have won two games in a row (both shutouts) over Revere after a mini-drought in the series.
