Brown’s goal gives hockey girls 1-1 tie

The Winthrop Lady Bulldogs hockey team maintained its undefeated record with a 1-1 tie against Marblehead Saturday. Junior captain Taylor Brown, a defenseman, scored the tying goal in the second period, with Capt. Lindsey Barker and McKenzie Clark being credited with the assists.

The Lady Bulldogs, who now stand at 2-0-2 on the season, managed to hold on for the tie despite being whistled for 11 penalties in the game, six of which came in the third period.

“Our primary penalty killing unit did a great job for us,” said WHS head coach Anthony Martucci of the quartet of forwards Caroline McKinnon (a 7th grader) and senior Rachel Mailhot and defensemen Brown and sophomore Amanda Cordes. “With six penalties in that final period, they saw a lot of action.”

Martucci also had superlative comments for his goalie, Katie Burt, a 7th grader from Lynn, who made 38 stops on the night, which came on the heels of her 40 save performance in a 0-0 tie with Beverly in the Lady Bulldogs’ previous contest.

“Katie is a great athlete who has been phenomenal for us. She really held the fort in the third period when it seemed we were shorthanded for the entire period,” said Martucci.

The Winthrop team, which consists of a combination of girls primarily from Winthrop and Lynn, obtained a waiver from the Winthrop School Department to permit middle school girls to play. In addition to McKinnon, other Winthrop middle schoolers on the squad are Anna Fucillo and Annie Mahoney. “They all are making substantial contributions,” noted Martucci. “They have been a very positive addition to the team this year.”

The Lady Bulldogs next have Masconomet Regional, a North Cape League rival, for a home-and-home series, with Winthrop playing Masco at Gov. Dummer Academy this Wednesday and Masco coming to Larsen next Wednesday (January 6) with a face off time of 6:10. The Lady Bulldogs also will host Peabody in between the Masco tilts this Saturday at Larsen at 1:30.
