Viking hockey team defeats Danvers, 4-0

The Winthrop High hockey team continued its winning ways, improving to 3-1 on the season, with a 4-0 blanking of Danvers last Wednesday.

Once again the big story for the Vikings was the superlative play of its defense and goalie Pat Feeley, who stymied Danvers to record their third shutout of the season. Winthrop sports a 1.00 goals against record through the first four games.

Alex Hamilton was the main gun in the offense department with a pair of lamplighters.

“We played well, “ said WHS head coach Dale Dunbar. “We’re playing better together at boh ends of the ice and the team is working hard to improve.” Brendan Loomis and junior Jake Rand are the co-captains with Hamilton and Harry Benson serving as assistant captains.

Rand is part of a talented, deep, and veteran defensive corps that includes Kyle Cummings, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Michael Paulson, Dylan Pilinski, Ryan McKinnon, and Timmy Barker.

Holding down the fort in goal are all league netminder Feeley and Steve Waites.

Asst. capt. Hamilton is centering a line between Joe Casey and Chris Lepore, while fellow asst. capt. Benson is on a line that includes Tyler Pettee, Connor Brugman, and Mitchell Paulson. Dunbar also will be utilizing a fourth line with sophomore Derek Eruzione in between freshman Sean Donahue and Bobby Clewer on the wings.

The boys will host Gloucester this Wednesday at Larsen at 6:10 and will travel to Beverly Saturday. They will journey to Saugus next Wednesday.

Dunbar also announced that the Vikings tentatively will play Marblehead on the ice at Fenway Park on January 9 at 1:00 p.m. “It depends on the schedule of games beforehand going off as planned,” said Dunbar. “But we’re very excited at the prospect of it.”
